Dear Families,

WOW - what a day we had for Harmony Day yesterday; proudly celebrating cultural diversity at Sacred Heart.

A very BIG thank you to all of our families for helping the children get ready for the day by either wearing cultural dress, the colours of their flag or something orange. It was amazing to see our school yard filled with such colour and excitement today. It was such a joy to watch our students  taking part in the parade with such happiness!

As part of our celebrations, children worked in multi-age groups from Foundation to Year 6 between play and lunch. Each group got to take part in rotations in the areas of Art, Music/Dance, Cooking or Sport.

Students either experienced cooking Afghani Rice or Pasta Making, traditional Bhangra dancing or singing indigenous songs/making music, flag art, bocce or a world of sports! Everyone had such a wonderful time.

We plan to create a display with our wonderful flags, a world map and lots of photos from the great celebration that was Harmony Day.

Thank you so very much to our parent helpers on the day, our student leaders and hard working staff. Thanks also to families who came along for a very special assembly led by our captains and the Foundation & Year One students.

Religious Education News

Next week, all classes, we will be learning about and sharing the events of Holy Week.   On Thursday morning, the Year 5/6 students will be enacting the washing of the feet, for the whole school to watch - it will be a chance to discuss and witness the significance of this a special part of the last supper.

We will also have displayed around the school the fourteen Stations of the Cross, which classes will visit and take part in a reflection of what happened on Good Friday.

Fifth Week of Lent (Week beginning Monday 18 March)

Memory is 26 years old and lives in rural Malawi. As the eldest child in a low-income farming family, Memory had to take on many household chores and farming activities to support her parents. They struggled to pay for Memory’s school fees and school supplies, and Memory often had to walk to school barefooted.

With the support of Caritas Australia and its partner the Catholic Development Commission in Malawi (CADECOM), Memory was able to enrol at a technical college where she learnt technical skills in carpentry. She undertook a three-year carpentry course, with CADECOM supporting part of her tuition and boarding fees.

Memory became the first female carpenter from her village. Today, she works as a carpenter at one of Malawi’s largest hydroelectric power stations. With the income from her job, she can provide financial support to her family and inspire other young women in her community so that they may have the opportunity to succeed in a male-dominated industry.

St. Patrick's Day Mass

Last Friday, I had the pleasure of taking the 4 school captains and our arts leaders to attend the St. Patrick's Day Mass for Catholic Education Week at St. Pat's Cathedral. The students represented the school with great respect and took part in the activities offered by MACS in the Treasury Gardens with enthusiasm - there was tug of war, games and some secondary school rock bands that they all enjoyed dancing too!

Take Care,
