Groovy Gardeners News
Last Thursday during lunchtime, our Groovy Gardeners had a second effort at loosening the soil in the garden bed, ready for some topsoil and manure to be added.
Environment Leaders Lucia and Lottie bring so much energy and enthusiasm to this role and they have some great ideas for the Mount Carmel community.
Lily visited the patch - she could smell the earth and even found a baby potato!
Congratulations to Year 10 student Lucy Allen who has been selected to fly to Canberra as part of a youth activism event.
Make It 16 is an organisation founded by young people from all over Australia, advocating to give 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote in Federal, State and local elections. As Australia has opened the opportunity to different demographics to vote, it has done nothing but strengthen our democracy.
Lucy has joined the campaign to lower our voting age to include 16 and 17-year-olds so that the voices of our youth are heard, and their ideas and political views can no longer be dismissed because of their age.
Library News
Why is book borrowing limited to your child's designated collection?
When curating books for the school library, we select texts appropriate for the respective age groups. While we purchase requested items for our collection, we must acknowledge that not all student requests correspond to age-appropriate material. We often receive requests for books endorsed on social media platforms like BOOKTOK, BookTube, and Bookstagram, where content filtration is rare.
We are committed to acquiring books students request.
Involvement is essential in selecting books for our collection. However, we will not purchase the item if these requests do not align with our collection selection standards.
Our library features distinct sections, including young adult books for students aged 14 and older, a senior section for those 12 years and older, and an extensive collection of primary fiction.
At times, students show interest in books beyond the recommended age category. In such instances, we revisit input from authors, booksellers, independent book review websites, school library networks, and their teachers to assess whether an exception can be made.
We must emphasise that we guide students towards age-appropriate books to match readers' cognitive, emotional, and educational needs. When we select books for our collection, we ensure the content is engaging, relevant, safe, and enjoyable.
