Wellbeing
Hi all,
As we embark on the journey of Term 2, let us delve into a critical aspect of student success that often goes unnoticed: attendance. Research has shown that each day of absence can have a substantial impact on academic performance, translating to a decrease in grades.
Studies conducted in schools have revealed a staggering correlation: one day of absence equates to approximately a 0.85 drop in grade. To illustrate, consider a student who typically achieves a grade of 90. If they are absent for just one day, their grade is expected to drop to 89.15. Now, envision the cumulative effect of absenteeism: with 20 days of absence, their grade plummets to 73.
In 2023, our school’s data shed light on the average days absent for primary and secondary students. This was 26 days for P-6 students and 35 days for 7-12 students. Extrapolating from the research findings, this means that a student's grade could potentially plummet by 22 points in P-6 and 29 points in 7-12 compared to perfect attendance.
To put this into perspective, let's consider a student aiming for a grade of 90. With 35 days absent over the year, their achievable grade dwindles to approximately 61—a significant decline from their potential.
For those interested in delving deeper into the data and studies behind this correlation, I encourage you to explore the comprehensive reports available at this link to the studies.
As we navigate Term 2, let us prioritise attendance not only as a means to academic success but also as a foundational element of holistic wellbeing and engagement. Together, let's ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive academically and personally.
Warm regards,
Ben Kilby
