Eighth scholarship concert/Osmý koncert na podporu  stipendia

In March, the Václav Havel Scholarship team, of which I am a member, organised the Roma Awareness and Diversity Week, an art and literary competition Třikrát Co as well as the 8th annual Václav Havel concert. 

Throughout the course of history, Roma people have experienced different forms of oppression. Back when the Roma were a nomadic nation, they could not stay in one place for a prolonged time and were prohibited from travelling long distances. During communism, Roma women were forcibly sterilised and speaking the Roma language was prohibited. Currently, what Freedom means to Roma people is that they are not discriminated against and oppressed but instead, have the right to speak their own language and celebrate their own traditions. The aim of the Václav Havel Scholarship team is of course to raise funds for Roma children so that they can receive an education at a school such as ECP. Additionally, our aim is to raise awareness of the discrimination that minorities face and how equality is important in our society. By organising the Roma Awareness and Diversity Week, the Václav Havel Scholarship concert and the art competition, a message is sent to the world about the importance of freedom and equality. 

Throughout the week, all year groups had different activities. Year 1 had a Roots of Roma lecture presented by a professor from Charles University, as well as a Roma literature talk by the publishing house Kher. Year 2 was working with clips from How I Became a Partisan, which is a film about the participation of Roma people in the resistance during the Second World War. Year 3 had a Workshop regarding the Holocaust of the Roma people and  a trip to the Lety concentration camp where Roma people were persecuted, forced to undertake hard labour and murdered. Both the workshop and the trip to Lety were organised in collaboration with The Museum of Romani Culture, for which we are very grateful as we have seen how well this workshop worked with the students. 

Years 4 and 5 had a debate on the question  “What are the consequences of globalisation on minority cultures and if it is generally useful for the development of our world?” Each of the 4 guests talked through their personal experiences and shared their insights into the topic. Our guests were: Viktor Kundrák - Director of Department of Human Rights and Protection of Minorities, Office of the Government of the Czech Republic, Michal Zapletal - our former student and now leading a design studio at CTU focused on the futures of Prague, Michal Miko - Founder of RomanoNet and Chloe Laycock- trainee geography teacher at ECP.  It led to a very fruitful debate as all guests shared their insights, many questions were raised and the responses were authentic and original. 

We also organised another year of the art competition Třikrát Co, or Three About Me’s. The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness of discrimination against minorities in Czech schools and to inspire children from all over the country to create art and literature. This year, we received more than 150 entries from 20 schools and we announced the winners at the concert. 

Furthermore, on the 15th of March, we held the 8th annual Václav Havel Scholarship Concert. Many ECP musicians participated with remarkable talent and enthusiasm. In addition, four truly gifted Roma musicians provided us with many insights into their culture. The atmosphere created was truly memorable.

At the end of the concert, when Dr Brown announced that we had raised more than 80 000 czk,  we knew that all the effort the team had invested into these events had proven more than worthwhile.

Tým Stipendia Václava Havla, jehož jsem členkou, uspořádal v březnu Týden romské kultury a diverzity, výtvarnou a literární soutěž Třikrát Co a 8. ročník koncertu na podporu Stipendia Václava Havla.

V průběhu dějin zažili Romové různé formy útlaku. Když byli Romové kočovným národem, nemohli zůstat na jednom místě delší dobu a měli zakázáno cestovat na velké vzdálenosti. Za komunismu byly romské ženy násilně sterilizovány a bylo zakázáno mluvit romsky. V současné době svoboda pro Romy znamená, že nejsou diskriminováni a utlačováni, ale místo toho mají právo mluvit svým vlastním jazykem a oslavovat své vlastní tradice. Cílem týmu Stipendia Václava Havla je samozřejmě získat finanční prostředky pro romské děti, aby se mohly vzdělávat ve škole, jako je ECP. Kromě toho je naším cílem zvýšit povědomí o diskriminaci, které menšiny čelí, a o tom, jak je v naší společnosti důležitá rovnost. Tím, že ECP pořádá Týden romské kultury a diverzity, koncert na podporu Stipendia Václava Havla a výtvarnou soutěž, vysílá do světa poselství o důležitosti svobody a rovnosti.

V průběhu týdne měly všechny ročníky různé aktivity. 1. ročník měl přednášku Roots of Roma v podání profesora Univerzity Karlovy a přednášku o romské literatuře nakladatelství Kher. 2. ročník pracoval s ukázkami z filmu Jak jsem se stala partyzánkou, což je film o účasti Romů v odboji za druhé světové války. 3. ročník měl workshop o holocaustu Romů a také výlet do koncentračního tábora Lety, kde byli Romové utlačováni, nuceni k těžkým pracím a vražděni. Workshop i výlet do Let byly organizovány ve spolupráci s Muzeem romské kultury, za což jsme velmi vděční, protože jsme viděli, jak se tento workshop studentům osvědčil.

Ve 4. a 5. ročníku probíhala debata na téma „Jaké jsou důsledky globalizace na menšinové kultury a zda je obecně užitečná pro rozvoj našeho světa?“ Každý ze 4 hostů hovořil o svých osobních zkušenostech a podělil se o své postřehy na dané téma. Našimi hosty byli Viktor Kundrák - ředitel odboru lidských práv a ochrany menšin Úřadu vlády ČR, Michal Zapletal - náš bývalý student a nyní vedoucí designového studia na ČVUT zaměřené na budoucnost Prahy, Michal Miko - Zakladatel RomanoNet a Chloe Laycock - stážistka na praxi v ECP. Debata byla velmi plodná, protože všichni hosté sdíleli své postřehy, bylo vzneseno mnoho otázek a odpovědi byly autentické a originální.

Uspořádali jsme také další ročník výtvarné soutěže Třikrát Co, aneb Three About Me’s. Cílem této iniciativy je zvýšit povědomí o diskriminaci menšin v českých školách a inspirovat děti z celé republiky k umělecké a literární tvorbě. Letos jsme obdrželi více než 150 příspěvků z 20 škol a na koncertě jsme vyhlásili vítěze.

Dále jsme 15. března uspořádali 8. ročník Stipendijního koncertu Václava Havla. Mnoho ECP hudebníků předvedlo svůj pozoruhodný talent a nadšení. Čtyři skutečně nadaní romští hudebníci nám navíc poskytli mnoho poznatků o své kultuře. Vytvořená atmosféra byla opravdu nezapomenutelná.

Když na konci koncertu pan ředitel Brown oznámil, že jsme vybrali přibližně 80 000 Kč, věděli jsme, že veškeré úsilí, které tým do těchto akcí vložil, se vyplatilo.

Auction/Aukce

A part of the concert was an auction. Firstly, some beautiful items were sold in a silent auction followed by a live auction where a signed book by Karel Schwarzenberg, work by Ms. Klett and a Tiffany&co pen were displayed. This year, we were especially lucky because many parents gave us high-value items and the Vaclav Havel Library also supported us.

Součástí koncertu byla také dražba. Nejprve se prodalo několik krásných předmětů v tiché aukci a poté následovala živá aukce, při níž se vydražila podepsaná kniha Karla Schwarzenberga, designové předměty paní Klett a pero Tiffany&co. Letos jsme měli velké štěstí, protože mnoho rodičů nám do aukce věnovalo předměty vysoké hodnoty a podpořila nás i Knihovna Václava Havla.

Art Competition/Výtvarná soutěž Třikrát Co! 

As a part of our efforts to raise funds for the Václav Havel Scholarship, we organise the annual ‘Třikrát Co!’ art competition. With this competition, we aim to encourage students all around the Czech Republic to express their creativity while simultaneously raising awareness of the importance of accessible education for Roma Students as the students have an opportunity to learn about our cause.Each year, we have nine categories in total, which are based on age and the prompt the young artists choose. 

This time the prompts were ‘Co chci změnit?’ (What do I want to change?), ‘Co je nejdůležitější?’ (What is most important?) and ‘Co chci rozdat?’ (What do I wish to give/share?).Over the past three years, the response has been consistently plentiful as we have been sent art works from all across the republic. This year, we were thrilled to receive entries from 27 schools, totaling more than 150 artworks. We were also pleased to notice an improvement in the quality of the submissions, which did make picking the winners more difficult. The winners were then auctioned during the Václav Havel concert on the 15th of March.

Whether awarded a prize or not, each art entry played a role in our fundraising and helped to support our cause. We adopted a unique exhibition format this year, where the remaining artworks were displayed on the glass in the ground floor at Elektra and available for purchase until the 22nd of March.

V rámci snahy získat finanční prostředky pro Stipendium Václava Havla pořádáme každoroční výtvarnou soutěž Třikrát Co! Touto soutěží se snažíme povzbudit studenty z celé České republiky, aby projevili svou kreativitu a zároveň zvýšit povědomí o důležitosti dostupného vzdělání pro romské studenty, protože studenti tak mají příležitost dozvědět se o našom projektu.

Každý rok máme celkem devět kategorií, které jsou založeny na věku a tématu, které si mladí umělci vyberou. Tentokrát jsme vyhlásili výzvy 'Co chci změnit?', 'Co je nejdůležitější?' a 'Co chci rozdat?'

Za poslední tři roky jsou ohlasy na soutěž velmi hojné a obdrželi jsme výtvarné práce z celé republiky. Letos jsme byli nadšeni, že jsme získali práce z 27 škol v celkovém počtu více než 150 uměleckých děl. Potěšilo nás také zlepšení kvality příspěvků, což ztížilo výběr vítězů. Obrázky vítězů pak byly draženy během koncertu na podporu stipendia Václava Havla dne 15. března.

Bez ohledu na to, zda získal ocenění nebo ne, každý umělecký příspěvek hrál roli v našem fundraisingu a pomohl podpořit naši věc. Letos jsme zvolili unikátní výstavní formát, kdy zbývající umělecká díla byla vystavena na skle v přízemí budovy Elektra a k zakoupení byla do 22. března.
