And now a word from

Mrs Richards...

Is it me or has Term 1 just gone by in a flash?  It has been a short term but we have packed plenty in and the children are ready for a break.

Why School Holidays Matter:

  1. Time for Rest and Relaxation: The school holidays provide students with a well-deserved break from the rigors of academic life. It's a time to unwind, recharge, and focus on activities that bring joy and relaxation.
  2. Opportunities for Exploration: Whether it's exploring nature, trying out new hobbies, or embarking on family adventures, the holidays offer endless opportunities for children to discover and learn outside the classroom.
  3. Bonding with Family and Friends: Holidays are the perfect time for families to come together and create lasting memories. From picnics in the park to movie nights at home, these moments strengthen bonds and foster a sense of belonging.

School holidays can be challenging and I remember well the feeling of dread when faced with those horrid words ……. “I’m bored!”. Here are some ideas that might help but don’t forget to try not to schedule too many structured activities. It is important that the children have down time and sometimes, by being bored, they will apply themselves to finding ways to entertain themselves.

1. Explore the Outdoors:

  • Nature Walks: Take a leisurely stroll through local parks, nature reserves, or botanical gardens. Encourage children to observe and learn about plants, animals, and natural habitats.
  • Picnics: Pack a delicious picnic and head to your favorite outdoor spot for a day of relaxation and family fun.
  • Hiking Adventures:  We are really lucky to have many options for outdoor walks that are within an easy drive of Parkdale.  Whether you head down the Mornington Peninsula or up into the Dandenongs there are walks to suit all levels of ability.

2. Get Creative Indoors:

  • Arts and Crafts: Set up a designated arts and crafts area at home with plenty of supplies such as colored paper, paints, glue, and beads. Encourage children to unleash their creativity by making handmade cards, paintings, or sculptures.
  • Cooking and Baking: Spend quality time together in the kitchen whipping up delicious treats and culinary delights. From simple cookies and cupcakes to homemade pizzas and smoothies, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
  • DIY Science Experiments: Transform your home into a science laboratory and conduct fun and educational experiments. Explore concepts such as chemical reactions, gravity, and electricity using household items.

3. Family Game Nights:

  • Board Games: Dust off your favorite board games and challenge each other to a friendly competition. Whether it's classics like Monopoly and Scrabble or a board game that the children have made themselves, game nights are always a hit.
  • Puzzle Challenges: Work together as a family to solve jigsaw puzzles of varying difficulty levels. Set up a designated puzzle table and watch as the picture slowly comes together piece by piece.
  • Outdoor Games: Take advantage of any fine days and engage in outdoor games such as tag, hide and seek, or soccer. Invite friends and neighbours to join in for added fun and camaraderie.

I am off to New Zealand for a driving holiday around the South Island that I am really looking forward to.   I hope you and your family have a fantastic and rejuvenating school holiday filled with laughter, adventure, and plenty of sunshine.
