Public Speaking Competition 2024
Public Speaking supports children to develop confidence and build their self-esteem. Confidence in public speaking is a valuable and vital, life long skill for all children to have.
At Our Holy Redeemer, we value Public Speaking greatly and provide our students with many opportunities to speak in front of small groups, to their class, and in front of the whole school at Assembly.
In line with the Victorian Curriculum we aim to instill strong Public Speaking skills in all our students from Foundation through to Year 6. This program is supported by a whole school focus on the development of different text types in our Writing lessons. Our Holy Redeemer conducts a whole school Public Speaking Competition every year and we are proud of its long standing tradition.
In 2024 we are conducting our Competition in Term Two. The Final will be on MONDAY 17th June. For those families planning their Winter Getaways, please be aware that if your child makes the Final, they must be at school on this day. Online submissions will not be accepted.

ANZAC DAY MEMORIAL SERVICE
As a whole school community we will gather together to participate in the OHR Memorial Service on Wednesday 24th April at 2.30pm. We warmly welcome all parents and extended family members to join us in the hall.
We are looking for community involvement and would love to hear from anyone who might be interested in assisting on the day. We are looking for a parent (or family member), who would be willing to speak to the students about the importance of remembering those who have served in war and the values we can learn from service men and women. (About 5 minutes). Whilst a current or past service member would be ideal, this is not a prerequisite.
Also, we would like a parent or family member to read the oath of remembrance at the memorial service. Any parent/s who could make a large rosemary wreath for the day would be most appreciated. This wreath will also be used at the Surrey Hills Dawn Service on Anzac Day where our school leaders will be participating.
Students are invited to bring any family memorabilia, (photos, medals, uniform pieces etc), to school on the day to place at the front of the hall if they wish. Any family member can also place memorabilia at the front just prior to the commencement of our service.
Please email lcanty@ohrsurreyhills.catholic.edu.au to let me know if you can help at the OHR ANZAC DAY Memorial Service before March 27th. (Next Wednesday)
Thanking you,
Lisa Canty
Family Maths Conversation Starters
“When schools, families and community groups work together to support learning, children tend to do better in school, stay in school longer, and like school more” (Henderson & Mapp, 2002).
You make a huge difference to your child’s attitude, motivation to learn, and academic achievement through showing a positive attitude towards mathematics and being engaged in mathematics at home. This could be helping to solve a problem that uses money, cooking, travelling, playing games or of course shopping.
To support mathematics learning at home here are some suggestions for conversations that you could have with your child:
• Play a game. Notice and talk about strategies. Notice and talk about where maths is used.
• List how you use mathematics on a typical day.
• Name something you did today that did not involve maths.
• What is one thing your child is good at? Identify the mathematics in that action/activity.
• Ask your child to explain some maths they are doing at school and talk about the way that you did that same thing when you were at school.
• Discuss what you do when you are faced with a challenging problem, what do you do to solve it?
I'd love to hear how your conversations go!
