Grade 6

Welcome to Term Four!!!

It’s hard to believe there are only nine short weeks left of primary school for our Grade 6 students at Grayling Primary School! This final term is packed with exciting events and celebrations as we prepare to farewell our amazing cohort and support them in their transition to high school. From leadership opportunities and graduation preparations to transition programs and end-of-year festivities, there’s so much to look forward to. (see the calendar dates further down***) We’re incredibly proud of how far our students have come and can’t wait to make these last nine weeks a memorable and meaningful conclusion to their primary school journey!

Reading

This term, our Grade 6 students will be engaging in another Ochre-based novel study, exploring the fantasy novel Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend. Throughout the unit, students will unpack, analyse, and discuss key literary elements, with a particular focus on those unique to the fantasy genre.

Writing

Their exploration of Nevermoor will also serve as inspiration and a mentor text for their own fantasy narrative writing, where they will apply and refine their understanding of sentence-level skills, characterisation, and imaginative world-building.

Mathematics

We are now two weeks into our Data Investigations unit, where students have been learning to collect, represent, and interpret data using tables, column graphs, and dot plots. They’ve also been exploring how to compare data displays and draw meaningful conclusions — skills aligned with the Victorian Curriculum focus on data interpretation and statistical literacy.

Next, we’ll move into a unit on Decimals, Percentages, and Fractions, where students will explore the connections between the three ways of representing part of a whole. They’ll apply these concepts to real-world problems, learning to convert between forms, identify equivalent values, and strengthen their understanding of proportional reasoning.

How you can support at home

Encourage your child to notice and discuss maths in everyday life — such as talking about discounts when shopping, fractions when cooking, or percentages on sports statistics. Making these real-world connections helps deepen their understanding and confidence with numbers.

Integrated: Economics and Business

This term, our Grade 6 students are exploring key economic concepts, including needs and wants, and the difference between goods and services. Through interactive discussions and activities, students are learning how resources are used to satisfy needs and wants and how these choices affect individuals and communities. They are also beginning to understand how consumers and businesses interact in the marketplace, and the factors that influence decision-making — such as price, availability, and sustainability.
