Grade 5

Literacy

Students have been reading The Last Bear by Hannah Gold, a heartfelt story about a young girl named April who sets out to save a stranded polar bear. Through this text, they have been exploring powerful themes such as friendship, courage, and environmental conservation. As they read, students are identifying persuasive language and rich vocabulary that they can apply in their own writing. Inspired by April’s determination, they are now planning persuasive pieces focused on the importance of conserving polar bears and protecting their habitats. This learning experience encourages students to use their voices to advocate for change and show empathy towards animals and the environment.

Numeracy

So far this term, students have been delving into the world of data by learning how to interpret, collect, and present information in different graph forms. They are discovering how data can tell a story and help us understand patterns and trends. As part of their learning, students are developing the skill of posing effective and meaningful questions to gather accurate and useful data from others. This process helps them think critically about what information they need and how best to collect it. Understanding how to gather and interpret data empowers students to make informed decisions and communicate their findings clearly and confidently.

2026 GPS Captain Process/Leadership Positions

Good Afternoon Parent & Carers

This past week, we spoke with all Grade 5 Students about the exciting process that has begun to decide our 2026 Student Leadership Team.

We briefed the students on the values that we hold as a school and the importance of student leadership at our school. Most students were very eager to collect their application form and start thinking of their ideas and values.

Applications for Student Leadership Positions were due by end of day, Friday the 17th of October. After this occurs, the Year 5 team in consolidation with School Leadership will read over these and decide on the 18-22 students who will be chosen to create a speech. Whilst we value the ideas of all students, this allows us to have ample time to listen to the chosen students and deliberate on who receives the final 13 Captaincy positions.

The final 13 Captaincy Positions will be announced at the Final Assembly of the Year.

If you have any questions regarding the process, please contact Zachary.Dodgson@education.vic.gov.au
