Grade 4

Literacy
This term, our students are immersing themselves in The Wild Robot by Peter Brown—a compelling narrative that intertwines technology, nature, and empathy. As they journey with Roz, a robot stranded on a remote island, they are not only enhancing their vocabulary but also developing persuasive writing skills.
Reading:
Throughout the story, students encounter a rich array of vocabulary. By identifying and analysing words in context, they gain a deeper understanding of language nuances. Activities such as Frayer Chart encourages critical thinking and helps students make connections between new vocabulary and their existing knowledge.
Writing:
Through the character of Roz, a robot who learns to care for the island's wildlife, students are gaining insights into the potential of robots and modern technology in our world. Roz's journey from a mechanical being to a compassionate caretaker exemplifies the positive impact that technology can have when guided by empathy and responsibility. Her ability to adapt, learn, and protect the island's creatures serves as a powerful narrative demonstrating how technology can coexist harmoniously with nature.
Students are reflecting on how understanding and kindness can bridge differences and lead to positive outcomes. Through their writing, they are learning to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the natural world.
This integrated approach not only enhances language skills but also installs values of compassion and environmental stewardship.
Numeracy
This term in Mathematics, Grade 4 students have been learning about data gathering and representation. They explored different ways to collect information, such as surveys and class tallies, and learned how to organise that data clearly. Students used their results to create pictographs and column graphs, focusing on using appropriate labels, titles, and scales. They interpreted their graphs to answer questions and make comparisons, developing their understanding of how data can be used to represent real-world information.
