SSV State Secondary Track and Field Championships
A cascade of rain ushered in the 2025 running of the SSV Secondary Track and Field Championships but that failed to dampen the spirits of our athletes, and as the sun began to shine, so did they!
On Monday 20 October, 12 students proudly represented St Joseph's College at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park, where the state's best assembled to push their limits and vie for gold.
We are beyond proud of all our participants, and we share in the excitement of those who saw podiums and personal bests!
We'd also like to thank the parents and staff who accompanied the students to Melbourne and back in what was undoubtedly a big day!

Year 7 Boys – LMR Cricket in Bendigo
A delayed start at the LMR cricket in Bendigo on Wednesday, gave our Year 7 Boys the chance to explore some of the incredible facilities at Catherine McAuley College, including their impressive indoor nets.
Once play got underway, the team showed great spirit in the field, with Tom Arthurson taking two outstanding catches and Tighe Teasdale and Brenton Mckenner bowling with excellent control throughout the day.
With the bat, Tom led the way, Tighe held strong in defence, and Will Andrew and Charlie Mitchell showed great resilience, almost batting through the full 20 overs.
Although our boys fell short against a very strong opposition, they gained valuable experience and will be all the better for it next time they take the field.
Year 7 & 8 LMR Basketball
It was a fantastic day of basketball across all Year 7 and 8 teams, with students showing great teamwork, sportsmanship, and school pride throughout the competition.
Year 7 Girls
The Year 7 girls displayed excellent teamwork and determination in their only game of the day. Despite going down to a more experienced opponent, they never stopped competing and showed great spirit. Emily Smith was a clear standout, leading by example and keeping the team focused throughout. Their hard work and positive attitude were rewarded as they proudly came home with the runners-up flag.
Year 7 Boys
The Year 7 boys began their first game against Victory Christian College with a slow start, trailing by eight points at halftime. They regrouped well in the second half, attacking the basket with more confidence and tightening up defensively, though the early deficit proved costly in an eight-point loss. The team responded strongly in their next match against Henderson, building an early lead and maintaining their momentum to secure an impressive 20-point win. It was a strong showing overall and a great reflection of the group’s growth and resilience throughout the day.
Year 8 Girls
The Year 8 girls had an excellent day on the court, playing three games, winning two, and advancing to the finals. The team worked cohesively, showing strong communication and composure in key moments. In the grand final, they faced a talented CMC side and, despite a determined effort, went down in a hard-fought contest. Abbey McCarty stood out for her defensive intensity, court vision, and drive to the basket, while Sadie Jones impressed with her accurate shooting and high work rate around the rim. It was a fantastic effort and a well-deserved finals appearance.
Year 8 Boys
The Year 8 boys capped off the day with a solid 2–1 record. Arli Walker demonstrated excellent vision and playmaking ability, consistently setting up teammates in scoring positions, while Taj Maddox was dominant under the basket, securing rebounds and finishing with confidence. The group showed strong chemistry, effort, and discipline across all games, making it a successful and rewarding day for the team.
Overall, all teams represented the school proudly, displaying skill, teamwork, and sportsmanship across every match.
LMR Intermediate Basketball
It was a successful day on the court for our Boys and Girls Intermediate Teams at the LMR Basketball Competition in Bendigo on Wednesday.
Our Intermediate Boys had a brilliant day, taking out the competition after an outstanding final game. The team displayed solid defence throughout, and after giving up a small lead at halftime, they surged ahead in the final minutes thanks to the attacking efforts of Mitch Sutton and Taj Flemming, backed by Kai Anderson’s excellent defensive work.
Our Intermediate Girls also put in a fantastic effort, recording strong wins over Irymple and Maryborough, and only narrowly going down to St Mary’s Swan Hill after a tight contest with CMC. Sage Dennis was a standout in attack, while Kate Head impressed with her consistent defensive work across the day.
A great effort and display of teamwork from all our players!
Korin Gamadji AFL 9s Program
On Monday, St Joseph’s College took four mixed teams to Bendigo to compete in the Korin Gamadji AFL 9s program, facing off against teams from Bendigo and Wodonga.
Our students adapted brilliantly to the unique AFL 9s rules and showed outstanding skill and teamwork throughout the day. Three of our four teams progressed to the finals - with the grand final played between St Joe’s Team 1 and Team 4!
After a thrilling full-time draw, the match went into overtime, with a golden goal from Campbell McCarty (Team 4) sealing the victory!
Congratulations to all players for their fantastic sportsmanship and team spirit, and a special shout-out to our winning team — Bodhi Teasdale-Dohnt, Hudson Kellett, Campbell McCarty, Sam Bux-Viane, Aarav Bhatia, River Best, Xavier Phillips and Luca Micalizzi.
