Reading  - Students will continue to practise and apply the comprehension strategies required to make sense of what they are reading. They will then apply these skills to specific reading responses based around character analysis, setting, plot, language and themes for their Literature Circle meetings. Students will also be reading about scientific terminology, theories, states of matter and  processes and reactions - all of which will help them make sense of their scientific investigations.

Writing Students will continue to write persuasive and narrative texts, revising the process of planning, drafting, revising/editing, conferencing and publishing. Our students will also publish their own picture story book for their 2026 Foundation buddies, which will then be presented to their buddies at the Buddy Picnic. Students will write procedural and scientific reports to follow the process of their investigations. This will include describing the aim, hypothesis, materials, method, observations and conclusions.

Speaking and Listening - This term, students will continue to build confidence in public speaking through presentations to their class, cohort and during assemblies. They will consolidate the skills developed throughout the year as they participate in our Year 5 debating program, applying techniques of persuasive speaking and respectful argument. In Literacy Circles, students will also engage in substantive conversations, sharing their ideas and connections about characters, setting, plot, themes and literary devices.

Spelling and Grammar - This term in Spelling, students will investigate the multiple ways common vowel sounds can be represented in written form. They will explore the 5 ways of writing the ‘i’ sound, 6 ways of writing ‘o’, as well as a range of other spelling patterns such as 'ough', 'ew and 'ue'. Students will examine when and why different spelling choices are used, such as their placement at the end or in the middle of words, and identify patterns that support accurate and purposeful spelling.
