Nurturing Pre-Service Teachers

At LCS, we love to welcome pre-service educators to our school and consider it a privilege to play a part in their development in becoming a teacher. They learn from us, but we can also hear about new practice from them.

This term we have had three pre-service teachers on campus. Past student, Kelly Hartwich, is studying Education in NSW and was excited to spend time with family as she completed her placement in Tassie at LCS.

Pictured with her mentor, Kelly spoke about her time here as a wonderful experience and said, "you can't become a quality teacher, unless you have quality mentors, and experience quality teaching."

Kelly's mentor, Secondary Mathematics Teacher Catherine Sparrow, has loved mentoring Kelly and said, "I learned the most from my prac experiences, so it's a privilege to be able to support someone in their journey."

Senior Art Exhibition

On Friday 17th November students were celebrated at the Senior Art Exhibition. This event showcased the efforts of year 11 and 12 art students where they displayed their end of year body of work, and year 10 students who displayed a collection of acrylic paintings on hexagons.

The event was attended by close to 100 people and was a special time of honouring students and staff and getting a sneak peek at the creative skills of students. Well done senior art students on your efforts throughout this year.

A big thank you to Mrs Goelst, who nurtured Senior students throughout the year and spent many hours ensuring this event would be a special evening for our school community.

Primary Chess Tournament

Primary School students, Ethan, Cash, Joshua and Jonty attended the Primary Chess Tournament held at Riverside Primary on Tuesday the 22nd of November. The LCS team was awarded 3rd place, with Ethan and Joshua receiving distinctions and Jony and Cash credits.

They had a great day, playing seven games - as well as extra games for fun. They received coaching from the number one ranked chess player in Tasmania, too.

Thank you to Riverside Primary School, Launceston for hosting the event, and to Mrs Serret who mentored the team. Congratulations!

TRJ Solo Camp

During week 5 of term 4 our Year 9 students engaged with the much-anticipated Solo Camp, a test of potential, a time for reflection and an opportunity to craft personal moments that will matter and will endure into their future.

For three days, our students were asked to take on a challenge of endurance, physicality, introspection, and empathy. First, students climb the 1227 metre Quamby Bluff, as a year cohort. For many, this is a first taste of mountain climbing, for others, this is a test of leadership, and for all, this is a lasting memory, connected with friendships and offering a new perspective of how blessed we are to call Tasmania home. Every year, a devotion is shared with the students looking out over northern Tasmania and is an excellent opportunity to consider how God is represented and can be exemplified in his Created world.

This year, I spoke with the year 9’s about our ability to make moments matter, taken from Chip and Dan Heath’s book, The Power of Moments. The Heaths suggest that there are four elements required for a lasting memory: pride of achievement, elevation of senses, connection to others, and insight. Engaging with God’s creation offers all these things and I’m sure that many of us can recall these types of moments in our own lives, and the lasting impact they have had.

After our mountain climb, the cohort split into two groups, traveling to different sites, and engaged with their 24-hour solitude challenge. Again, Heaths’ four ingredients for meaningful memories were thrown into a day spent in creation, some camped by a babbling river, others nestled in bushland. The students were asked to consider their own perspective, on what has been, on what is and on what will be, and to think carefully about the influences that they lean on in their lives.

The successful completion of Solo Time was celebrated by all as we reunited at Mersey Bluff and enjoyed hot chips by the sea. All had a lot to re-live, to share and to process; there was a sense of accomplishment in the air, all just a fraction more experienced, with a tad more confidence, and dare I say, looking a little bit more grown up.

Student Bus Travel Expectations

Student Office Passes Information

ABSENCES/ATTENDANCE

Communication regarding a student’s absence needs to come via the school office. This information will then be passed on to the student’s teachers. Parents are asked where possible to telephone the school or email the office in advance when a student will be absent.  If you subscribe to the mobile app, The Hub you can also lodge an electronic absentee form which will reach the office immediately.  The school telephone number is (03) 6327 2854 and email is office@lcs.tas.edu.au

Students who are late must sign in at the school office.  Students will be issued a ‘late pass’ that must be presented to their teacher.  Students who sign in ‘late’ must have a note of explanation from home.   Three unexplained late arrivals will result in a detention.

Yr11/12 students that have a study period in the morning and do not attend Class Teacher must sign in at the office as soon as they arrive at school, if students have not signed in whole day absences will be on their record. Yr 11/12 students may leave the school grounds during study periods, however they are required to sign out and back in at the office.  This is important, particularly in the case of an emergency, so students can be accounted for by the staff and emergency services.

Written permission is required to leave the school grounds during school hours (except Year 11 & 12).  Students are to meet parents at the office. All students must use the sign out folder at the student counter in the main office.  When students return to school, they should report to the student counter in the main office and sign in.

If families intend to be absent from school due to extended holidays (3 days or more), parents need to fill out in advance an Application for Extended Leave for Travel form, found under the Parents and Students/Downloads & Policies tab on our website:  www.lcs.tas.edu.au(Please see Extended Leave Policy on next pages)

MEDICATION

Should your child need to take prescribed medication at school please inform the school office.  All medication, both prescription and over the counter medication, needs to be in original packaging and labelled with clear dosage instructions (prescription medication needs dosage instructions from a registered medical practitioner) and must be administered at the school office and students are not permitted to carry medication at school. Medical forms are sent home at the beginning of each school year and parents are able to indicate whether they give permission for paracetamol to be administered if required.

UNIFORM

Students who are not in correct uniform, wrong jacket or coloured socks etc must get a uniform pass from the office.  A note of explanation should be provided by parents.  Three uniform non compliances, without parent explanation, will result in a detention.
