Year 9 Italian Elective Lygon Street Excursion

Where’s Italy?

The Year 9 Italian elective class went in search of glimpses of Italy and the Italian influence from Flinders Street in the city to Lygon Street, Carlton.

We started at Federation Square; which symbolised the community squares at the heart of every Italian city. This was the first tick in a table we would fill with everything of Italian inspiration that we spotted on our ‘passeggiata’ (wander) through the city.

On the way, we saw a cathedral, cobblestone paths, Italianate granite and marble, pizzerie, gelaterie, ristoranti, art and architecture front and centre, Vespas parked on footpaths, designer clothes and cars mixed in with the world-famous Melbourne coffee culture. Signora Palermo even discovered the Florentine-inspired: “Il Papiro”; an authentic Italian handmade stationery store in Degraves St, minutes from our cafe checkpoint at Brunetti Oro in Flinders Lane.

Refreshed after the opportunity to purchase some traditional Italian cakes and pastries, we caught the tram to Lygon St.

Once there we visited our Italian organisation, CO.AS.IT, to experience the heartfelt history of the permanent immigration exhibition at the Museo Italiano. Some of us also chose to view the potent images that symbolised the experience of immigrants via the temporary photographic exhibition of Angela Viora.

As we exited CO.AS.IT and looked upwards, we stood in awe of the imposing immigration mural “Per L’Australia” by Roman street artist, Alice Pasquini.

Many of us decided to relax over lunch at Brunetti Classico, while others took up the option to branch out further along Lygon Street and choose their own lunch adventure.

Before leaving the “Little Italy” experience of Carlton, we completed a treasure hunt of Lygon Street observing some of the features, culture and history of the iconic street that has embodied the spirit of Italy for as long as we can remember.

At the end of the day, Italy was everywhere from the fast-paced Ferrari, Ducati and Maserati flyingpast, to the essence of “La Dolce Vita” – slowing down and enjoying the sweet, simple things in life.

Year 10 Drama Performance Night - Romeo and Juliet

The Year 10 Drama class were thrilled to perform a modern adaption of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

Thank you to friends and family who supported the talented group of students. It was a wonderful night supporting the school community in Performing Arts. And a lively evening filled with many laughs and smiling faces.

Well done to the Year 10 Drama class for your effort and enthusiasm and for creating an entertaining performance!
