Grade 3/4 Learning
Over the past two weeks students in 3/4D and 3/4J have been learning about measuring volume in maths. To help students form understanding of the volume of a cubic metre they were set the task of creating one out of newspaper. We used the linear abacus as our measuring tool.
As each bead on the abacus is a cubic centimetre, students discovered that each side had to be 100 beads in length, the beads also allow for direct comparison between cubic centimetres and cubic metres. As well as building understanding of volume, this activity provided plenty of opportunity for the students to experiment with measurement, work in groups, problem solve and of course; have fun!
