Geography In Action Fieldtrip
Geographers undertake fieldwork so they may collect data to inform their research into the importance of the environment and the ways that humans work to manage it.
On Friday 13th October, the Geography In Action class undertook a tour of four Port Phillip Bay beaches in order to determine whether the management of the beaches would ensure the preservation of the environment for future generations.
The four beaches, Elwood, Half Moon Bay, Rickett’s Point and Seaford provided an insight into the varied approaches adopted by councils in order to ensure that the locals, as well as visitors had the opportunity to experience a key Australian environment, the beach. While students undertook their fieldwork, collecting data and capturing photos of the day, many will probably remember the day for the windy and cold conditions and the eventual downpour that had been brewing all day long! Nonetheless, the opportunity to learn, have fun and support the local economy was eagerly adopted by all attendees.
The whole day would not have been possible without the assistance of Khristian Mizzi who kindly drove the group to the four beaches and ensured the timely return to school.
It is important to note that while students were impressed by Elwood beach, learnt the importance of Half Moon Bay and Rickett’s Point, it was Seaford beach that appealed to all the students. So, maybe you are looking for a trip to the coast these upcoming holidays? 10GIA02 recommends Seaford beach for the inviting environment, beautiful sculpture and café that offer refuge in the rain!
