Learning Across the

Senior School

Digital Technologies

There has been fun and games in the Digital Technologies learning space for Years 7 – 9.

7G have worked in groups to generate Loreto College’s environment, then, now and into the future. They have coded some remarkable stories in the virtual world landscape, incorporating 360 images and other 3D designed objects.

Year 8 DT students have constructed their claw arm robot and now the games begin. Which robot will be able to be driven by their human controller to win the soccer game? Can the robots be coded to grab, lift, move and drop the ball in the designated spot?

Two teams of Year 8 and 9 students have been participating in the six week Lumination League Challenge. The 8Alive team made up of Sophie Best, Perri Genesin and Teresa Caruso, lead by Sophia Field, won the Baseball challenge. 9LeapNLead, made up of Grace Collins, Alice Shanahan, Sienna Verlingieri and Wendy Yu and lead by Jemma Meoli,  drew to win the Dart challenge. We have learned to play a number of sports, virtually, and some we have no intention of pursuing in real life!

Material Solutions - Textiles

This semester Year 7 Red were given the task to design a cushion cover using a range of hand and machine sewing techniques.

The cushion cover was to have four panels which once sewn together represented one complete side. The other side could be the same or contrasting. The other design feature was to appliques a shape onto the one of the panels. Once this was done a zip was stitched into the side so a cushion insert could be put in.

Many new skills were part of this experience. The students had to learn to use a sewing machine and all the features that are offered. Hand sewing skills were also incorporated along with learning the techniques of applique and zip insertion.

I am sure that these creative designs will add a colourful highlight to their homes for many years to come.

Chinese Class Immersion

How adept are you at ordering a meal in a restaurant? Booking a ticket? Navigating the transport system? All in Chinese? And without leaving the school environment?

The students undertaking Year 10 and 11 Chinese classes immersed themselves in a range of experiences in our Lumination Lab. They accessed Mondley as part of revision exercises and then, using the immersive virtual reality tool known as IMVR, students were able to select the level of experience that would most suit them. The girls could read the characters, view the pin yin and speak their responses, gaining instant feedback before moving on. Students were all very positive and were very grateful for Ms Ann-Maree Tippins’ expertise in using this learning tool.

Ethics Olympiad

Is it ever right to lie? Is there is a moral difference between a verbal promise and a written contract?

These were some of the questions ten of our Year 9 students were asked in the Middle Years Ethics Olympiad which took place on Zoom last Monday.

We congratulate our two teams for their outstanding effort! Loreto Blue winning Gold and Loreto Red winning Bronze! What an amazing achievement by these young, confident women.

Our Loreto Blue team will continue their hard work competing in the International Ethics Olympiad in late February 2024.
