Hello everyone,
Hoping you are well, we have had a beautiful start to term three.
100 DAYS OF SCHOOL:
I just want to say a huge thank you to all the families for coming to celebrate such a huge milestone for the Preps, they had an amazing day and truly felt so loved by their families and peers. We have an amazing cohort who have such strong friendships so seeing them celebrate each other was beautiful! Thank you again, all of your effort was appreciated.
READING:
This term, we have been focusing on consolidating our letter sounds and our digraph recognition!
We have been continuing to work on our reading skills, chunking, segmenting and blending words to see if we can decode them ourselves. This term we also have a big focus on sight words and being able to spell/see them in texts that we read.
Moving through the term we will continue looking at different types of texts, rhyming words and being able to answer questions about texts we read.
WRITING:
A big focus this term is building our confidence in writing known letter sounds and digraphs. We have been doing weekend recounts on Monday and starting to learn how to spell places that we always go. As the term progresses we will continue to develop this skill!
We have been working on proper letter formation and keeping the letters on the lines using our dotted thirds.
NUMERACY:
In numeracy, we have been finally met linus the minus, and learning strategies to begin subtracting with numbers from 0-10. The children have loved playing subtraction smash with playdough, fill the cup and empty the cup and race to 100 as our warm up games. This term we will also be looking at numbers to twenty and beyond and encourage Prep AA students to recognise the numbers up to 100. They should be incredibly proud of their achievements so far this term!
HISTORY:
We have continued to discuss how time can impact our lives, we have been looking at how their childhoods right now compare to Miss A's childhood. We have looked at some of my favourite activities to do when I was young compared to what they enjoy doing now. We are going to continue learning more about history and the history of Australia for the rest of the term!
Special events:
NANA BETTY VISIT:
We had a lovely visit to kick off our history unit for term three, my beautiful grandmother Betty came and visited the Preps to answer their questions about what school and life was like when she was young. Students enjoyed listening about her adventures at boarding school and how she never showered with any hot water!!! They created art work for her to take home and Nana Betty brought photos from when she first came to Australia from India more then 50 years ago. The children were all extremely respectful and we used this as a practise before we go and visit the Cardinia Aged care home in the coming weeks.
AFL CLINICS:
We were lucky to have our local Auskick representatives come to OPS and run AFL clinics, the children enjoyed practicing their hand ball and kicking skills. They also enjoyed playing poison ball and being able to ask questions about what the Auskick program is like.
Buddies:
Welcome to term 3!
We have hit the ground running this term. In reading and writing, we have been writing book reports and are now turning our reports into a persuasive piece of writing. In maths, we explored data and graphs. We investigated a topic of our choosing, collected data, displayed our data on a graph and presented our findings to the grade. We are now moving into developing strategies for solving subtraction sums. In history, we are starting to explore how things have changed over time.
The first week of term, we celebrated NAIDOC week. We started each morning with a yarning circle, this gave everyone an opportunity to share with each other. We also learnt about different famous Indigenous Australians such as Patty Mills and Kathy Freeman.
We look forward to what is to come during the term!
