Stage 6 Food and Technology visit The Treat Factory, Berry

Last Friday 26 July, to support their studies of the Australian Food Industry, Food Product Development and Food Manufacturing, the Stage 6 Food Technology class visited the Berry Treat Factory. Students were able to learn about the origins of chocolate, sample the various stages of its production and were fortunate enough to create their own 'Hot Chocolate Spoons'. After the demonstration, students gathered in the 'Dairy Bar' to enjoy the delicious, locally produced, treats and discuss the manufacturing and business operations observed during the visit. This visit was a valuable and enjoyable enrichment to their studies and we are grateful to 'The Treat Factory' for going out of their way to accommodate us.

Line day - a chance to get our teeth into French

Almost as good as going to New Caledonia (which had to be cancelled because of civil unrest in the country), was our Senior French line day. We started the day with a discussion on 'Qu'est-ce que tu as fait pendant les vacances?', followed by a Bible reading in French. It was then time to prepare our lunch: Boeuf Bourguignon and Gratin Dauphinois. Next there was a cold case murder to solve, 'Who killed Leena?' (Qui a tué Leena?), stretches to be done, and, after a delicious lunch, a movie (Les Choristes) to be watched. In French classes we constantly have the problem that the time disappears too quickly and line day 2024 was no exception!

Making moves with Primary Chess

Last Term, on a chilly Thursday of week 9, Nowra Christian School hosted the Shoalhaven Zone tournament as part of the NSW Primary Schools Chess Competition. NCS competed against local schools from Illaroo Road, Gerringong and Huskisson Public Schools. We were fortunate to have Mr Bevan Clouston run the tournament and adjudicate games that were too close to call.

Before the tournament, players are placed into teams of 4 and ranked according to ability (board 1 to board 4). When teams play each other, board 1 plays board 1, board 2 plays board 2 and so on. Players score 1 point for a win, 0 points for a loss and 0.5 points for a draw. NCS fielded 5 teams from years 3 to 6, and sometimes playing against teams from their own school. All up, there were 15 teams competing on the day.

Results

The deserving winner of the day was a strong team from Illaroo Road Public School with 23.5 points. NCS teams placed 2nd (20 points), 3rd (17.5 points) and equal 4th (16 points). I am very proud of all the children as they played some very challenging and sometimes long games. Across the board (pun intended), they showed great attitudes, win lose or draw. Our students represented their school very well, always trying their best and interacting with adult visitors and other children in a friendly and respectful manner.

Year 3 Science Incursion Fun

In the last week of Term 2, Year 3 were lucky enough to take part in a full day of Science fun. Our science topic for the term was solids, liquids and gases. The team from Ranger Jamie incursions came to our school and led the students in a range of hands on activities like firing air rockets, making slime and exploding a barrel full of ping pong balls. What a great day of hands on learning to cap off the term!

It's a wrap: 9th Annual Tour de Worrigee 2024

Students have been eagerly awaiting the final results of the Tour de Worrigee 2024 and now they know! This year we went down to Twin Waters Reserve because of the road works at school. This was a much longer course and most students only did 1-2 laps.

However, Sim, Jude and Asher each did 4 laps, Benjamin did 5 laps and Tom did a mighty 6 laps! C'est fantastique!

At the end of the 'road stage' (laps around the lake) the points were as follows:

  • Ineos Grenadiers  45
  • Uno X Mobility  45
  • Team Visma  50
  • Lotto Dstny  50
  • Bora Hansgrohe  55

Time trials were next: Fastest male: Sim 7.14 seconds; Fastest female: Grace 9.16 seconds

So at the end of the time trials the scores had changed:

  • Lotto Dstny 94
  • Team Visma 95
  • Uno X Mobility 96
  • Bora Hansgrohe 97

During other activities throughout the day, extra points could be gained, so by the end of the competition the results were:

Equal third place: Lotto Dstny and Team Visma

Second place: Bora Hansgrohe

FIRST PLACE 2024: Uno X Mobility

Congratulations to everyone for an outstanding effort and a great day!

Exploring Recovery Strategies: Stage 6 PDHPE Students Visit SAUNAUS

As part of the Stage 6 PDHPE course, students have been exploring various recovery strategies, examining their key features and potential benefits for performance.

During the PDHPE Line Day, students visited SAUNAUS, a new holistic health and wellbeing facility in Wollongong. They experienced the traditional hot rock sauna, ice baths, and AI massage chairs.
