Middle School Arts & Design Introduction

Our Middle School Arts and Design classes have begun! Students are embarking upon Units of Inquiry that place them at the centre of their learning, asking them to be critical, creative and innovative thinkers. The semester will prepare our students for their annual Design and Arts Exhibition, entitled Techne – Repurpose. Throughout the semester, students will engage in unique opportunities to design, create and perform work that addresses issues surrounding a sustainable future.

Middle School Performing Arts

Students in Year 6 have begun a Unit of Inquiry on the theatre tradition, Pantomime. Students are inquiring into silent expression, using exaggerated movement and emotion to perform different characters. Our Year 7 and 8 students have commenced a unit focusing on scene study, using their voices and physicality to communicate a variety of roles. Our year 9 students are learning about performance and production terminology, investigating and designing through collaboration. Students are also using the play, Romeo and Juliet (William Shakespeare) to illuminate their ideas, fulfilling both the acting and designing roles of the play. All students across the Middle Years are asked to deliberate how theatre has and continues to create meaningful and sustainable change.

Designing Solutions for a Sustainable Future

At Oakleigh Grammar, our Product Design program empowers students to tackle real-world problems by developing their understanding of sustainable and future-focused design practices. Throughout Semester 1, students have embraced a variety of challenges that have allowed them to grow in both personal attributes and practical skills.

Highlights from Semester 1

Our students have engaged in a wide range of activities, gaining valuable skills and insights in the process. Here are some of the key experiences they have had:

  • Wiring and Safety in the PD Room: Students learned the importance of safety protocols and the fundamentals of wiring.
  • Precision in Measuring: Properly measuring wood was emphasized as a crucial step in ensuring successful project outcomes.
  • Glue Gun Mastery: Students explored the use of glue guns to create propeller-driven toy cars.
  • Orthogonal Drawing and Wiring: Mastering the art of orthogonal drawing and wiring was a significant focus, enhancing students' technical skills.
  • Building and Wiring Toy Cars: Hands-on experience in building and wiring toy cars helped students understand the complexities of mechanical design. Considering force and motion.
  • Straight Line Measurement and Sketching: Accurate measurement and sketching were practiced developing detailed designs for the cars.
  • Using Saws and Box Cutters: Learning to use saws and box cutters safely and effectively was an important part of the curriculum.
  • Time Management: Students learned the importance of managing their time efficiently to meet project deadlines.

Year 7 Media Arts

The Middle Year Media Arts has started off with a strong start into the term with a new approach for this semester. Students have been challenged in an array of skills surrounding creativity, time management, and the ability to analyse various mediums within media. The unit for Term 3 will focus on the creation of a pre-production journal, which will then assist them in Term 4 for their stop motion unit. Embracing the identify and lens of Media Arts continues to enrich the school till this day, with the upcoming Arts exhibition in Term 4. Further empowering the arts here at Oakleigh Grammar.

Year 8 Media Arts
