Author Event: Alice Pung visit during Book Week

As part of our Book Week celebrations, the Library hosted a visit by best-selling author Alice Pung.  The Year 9 English Enrichment Program and the Years 7 & 8 VHAP students attended her first presentation during Period 4 on Tuesday, 20 August and were enthralled as Alice shared her experiences of being the child of a family fleeing genocide in Cambodia.  Alice was so engaging as she shared her sometimes humorous and sometimes sad experiences of racism, relating this back to her writing the novel ‘Laurinda’.  Alice’s second presentation was open to all students at lunchtime.  About 40 students attended and were again, so engaged as she encouraged them to find their own voice and cultivate that voice as part of their own writing journey.

In both presentations she allowed time for questions, of which the students took full advantage.  Between each presentation, Alice also spent time chatting to some of the students as well as signing their copies of “Laurinda”

It was an absolute pleasure to have Alice visit and we are so grateful she was willing to come and not only share her unique perspective, but was so encouraging of our budding authors.
