What's Happening in Grade 2?

What a spectacular and exciting start to the final term of the year! Before we dive into Term 4, let’s take a moment to reflect on the wonderful experiences that wrapped up Term 3. Students had a fantastic time on their excursion to Sovereign Hill, where they learned so much through hands-on experiences. We also celebrated our whole school production, where our talented Grade 2 performers sang, danced, and entertained the crowd beautifully.
As Term 4 kicked off, many students took part in the camp program, further developing their independence and social skills through the school dinner and the much-anticipated Grade 2 Sleepover! Students engaged in fun activities and games and were thrilled by Glenn the Magicman’s Show. Their teamwork and resilience shone through as they prepared for bed, made their own lunches, and even helped with breakfast the next morning—ready for another exciting day of learning.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, we recently concluded our multiplication and division unit. Students explored a range of strategies such as repeated addition and subtraction on a number line, using arrays, equal groupings, and skip counting to solve and represent problems.
We’ve now begun our fractions unit, where our young mathematicians are learning to recognise and describe halves, quarters, and eighths as equal parts of a whole.
In our non-number learning, students have been comparing and ordering the mass of objects using informal units. Through activities like hefting and balancing, they have demonstrated a growing understanding of what makes objects heavier or lighter. They have also started learning to collect and represent data using simple graphs.
English
In Writing, we’ve just completed our focus on exposition texts. Students constructed one-sided arguments on various topics, forming opinions and supporting them with three strong reasons. Many went above and beyond, adding detailed supporting statements to strengthen their arguments.
Next, we’ll move into narrative writing, where students will craft stories with engaging orientations, complications, and resolutions designed to entertain their readers.
In Reading, students have deepened their understanding of exposition texts and are now exploring narrative structures, purposes, and language features. We will continue to look at how authors use conjunctions, adjectives, nouns, and verb tenses to make their writing interesting and complex.
Future Focused Learning
This term’s inquiry unit builds on our Term 3 Geography topic, focusing on our Local Community. Students have discovered how shared characteristics and interests connect people within communities—whether for recreation, learning, food, or worship. They’ve also learned how to care for the special places that are meaningful to them.
As we move forward, we’ll broaden our focus to explore our National Community, Australia, and then our Global Community. Students will soon begin an exciting “My Country of Origin” project, where they’ll share and celebrate their cultural backgrounds.
A Note from the Grade 2 Team
Thank you for your continued support throughout what has been a truly magnificent year! We look forward to a busy but exciting few weeks ahead as we celebrate all that our Grade 2 students have achieved.
As Summer approaches, please remember the importance of water safety. Our Swimming Program will run from 8th–12th December, and we encourage all families to approve their child’s participation. Learning to swim is an essential life skill that keeps us all safe in and around water.
Warm regards,
The Grade 2 Team
Ms Gemayel and Ms Kourkoulis 🙂
