Year Six

Dear Year Six families,
The weeks are flying by as our students near the end of their primary school journey. Since our incredible Exhibition, it has been a busy and exciting time, full of learning and fun. Our Student-Led Conferences were a great success, and it was wonderful to see students proudly showcasing their work from Semester Two to their families.
Reading
Over the last few weeks, students have been exploring how authors create engaging biographies. They began by examining how a strong hook captures the reader’s attention and then learned how chronological order and timeconnectives help organise events in a person’s life. Students also explored the use of emotional language and third-person narration to connect readers with the subject. Using mentor texts from Little People, Big Dreams and Epic, they analysed examples, discussed their ideas in groups, and applied their learning by researching a scientist or inventor, organising their findings, and preparing to write their own biographies.
Writing
In Writing, students have been applying their biography writing skills. They practised creating "hooking" openings using vivid detail, questions, quotes, or action, and explored the use of past tense. Students learned to organise events in chronological order with time connectives, and use emotional language and third-person narration to engage readers. They have started to apply these skills through the writing process, researching a scientist or inventor, and planning their biographies.
Maths
In Maths, students explored symmetry, angles, and transformations. They practised identifying line and rotational symmetry in shapes and everyday objects, and created symmetrical patterns. They also estimated, measured, and constructed angles using protractors, learning to recognise acute, right, obtuse, straight, reflex, and full angles.
Students applied their learning through translations, reflections, and rotations, creating tessellations and symmetrical patterns to demonstrate their understanding of shape, symmetry, and spatial reasoning. Extension students explored congruent and similar shapes, including those formed through transformations.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, students have been exploring the evolution of inventions and the impact of innovation on society. They compared early designs, like Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone, with modern versions, discussing changes in design, materials, and purpose. Students researched famous innovators, examining what inspired their inventions, key developments, and their impact on society. They recorded their findings in diagrams and short reflections, considering how inventions might continue to evolve in the future.
Reminders
