Year One

Dear Year One Community,
We’ve now passed the halfway mark of Term 4, and it’s wonderful to see how much growth and confidence our students have shown this year! The classrooms have been filled with energy, creativity, and enthusiasm as students continue to build on their skills and work collaboratively across all learning areas. Below is an overview of what we’ve been exploring in Year One over the past fortnight.
Reading
Students have continued to develop their inferring skills. They are now familiar with what the word inferring means and are practising this skill by using text and picture clues, combined with their prior knowledge, to make inferences. This strategy helps them to understand what is happening beyond the words on the page.
Writing
In Writing, we have begun to explore narratives. Students have been learning about the key features of a narrative, including the characters, setting, problem, and solution. They are also learning how to structure their stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end. We have focused on developing detailed settings and how to introduce them using adjectives, following our strong character focus earlier in the term. Students are now exploring how to write engaging problems and solutions that connect to their chosen characters and settings.
Mathematics
Our focus in Maths has shifted to money. Students are learning to recognise, sort, and order Australian coins, with some students also beginning to identify, order and use notes. They have been practising adding collections of money to find total amounts in a variety of contexts. We began by exploring different representations of $1 and have since moved on to making and identifying different amounts.
Inquiry
In Inquiry, we finished our fifth Unit of Inquiry with an exciting project where students designed and created their own animal and built a habitat triorama including their creation. Students began by selecting a habitat and then designed an animal with unique adaptations to support its survival in that environment.
We have also begun our sixth Unit of Inquiry by unpacking the central idea: The Sun and Moon Create Changes on Earth. Students have shared what they already know, recorded their wonderings, and have started exploring the different elements, beginning with the Sun.
