Grade Six

Term 4 is always a busy term and for the Grade 6 students in particular! The students have settled back into school routines beautifully and are making the most of their final term at Oatlands. There’s a real sense of excitement in the air as we move towards the end of primary school and prepare for all the special events that come with it.
In English, students have been exploring magazine writing and the features that make an article engaging and informative. They began by analysing examples of magazine articles, identifying things like tone, structure, and the use of images and captions to engage their readers. From there, each student chose a company or brand to research. Using what they had learned, they created their own magazine article to present their information.
Our Ice Cream Inventor unit in Maths has been a real hit! Students worked through a series of real world mathematical tasks that challenged them to combine creativity with practical problem solving. They started by surveying their peers to discover the most popular ice cream flavours across the school. The data was then organised into graphs and visual displays, which students used to make decisions about which ice cream flavours might sell best.
Once their product was designed, they moved into the business side of things, calculating the cost of ingredients, setting prices, and predicting profit margins. The unit finished with a class vote on which ice cream was the best and those students then set up their own mini ice cream stalls and sold their creations to eager customers. The excitement and teamwork on display were fantastic, and it was great to see our little entrepreneurs applying maths concepts to their businesses.
We’re halfway through our Health and Human Development unit. Students have been learning about how the human body grows and changes, what makes a healthy lifestyle, and how different systems in the body work together. These lessons have sparked some great discussions, with students showing curiosity and maturity as they ask thoughtful questions and share what they have learnt.
We encourage families to keep these conversations going at home, talk with your child about what they have learned each week. It’s been lovely to see how engaged and respectful the students have been during these sessions.
The remainder of Term 4 will fly by, with a range of end of year events and activities planned to celebrate this special final chapter of primary school. These experiences are designed to give students a chance to reflect, connect, and make lasting memories with their peers before heading off to secondary school.
Please keep an eye on Compass for upcoming events and consent forms so your child doesn’t miss out. We appreciate your continued support in helping students stay organised during this exciting time of year.
