Grade Five

We have all returned from the holidays recharged, refreshed and ready to give our very best this term. The students have settled back into their routines beautifully and have shown great enthusiasm and focus in their learning. It’s wonderful to see their positive attitudes and excitement as we begin their final term in Grade 5, a term filled with new challenges, celebrations and opportunities to shine.
WORLD EXPO
The Grade 5 World Expo was an exciting and engaging event that showcased the students’ hard work, creativity and enthusiasm for learning. Each student selected a country to research and presented their findings through an informative and visually impressive display.
Students thoroughly enjoyed exploring their chosen countries, learning about geography, culture, landmarks and traditions, and took great pride in sharing their projects with others. During the Expo, Grade 5 students and teachers had the opportunity to visit other classrooms and admire the incredible displays created by their peers.
We were also delighted to welcome our Principals and our Grade Prep Buddies, who were equally impressed by the effort and passion shown by our young global learners. The World Expo was truly a highlight of the year and a wonderful celebration of curiosity, collaboration and creativity.
ENGLISH
This term in English, our focus is on narrative and persuasive writing, with an exciting emphasis on developing strong communication and leadership skills. In our narrative unit, students are learning how to bring emotion and depth into their writing by using the six senses to help their readers imagine each moment. They are also experimenting with figures of speech such as similes, personification and onomatopoeia to make their stories more vivid and engaging.
As the term progresses, we will shift our focus to persuasive writing and public speaking, with students preparing and delivering speeches as part of the Grade 6 Leadership process. This will give them valuable opportunities to build confidence, express their ideas clearly and speak with purpose and passion in front of an audience.
Alongside this, our Literature Circle discussions continue to challenge students to think critically about what they read, ask thoughtful questions and build on their comprehension and vocabulary skills. It is wonderful to see our Grade 5 students growing as both writers and thinkers this term.
MATHS
In Mathematics this term, our focus is on strengthening students’ understanding and application of the four operations - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These skills are being reinforced through our warm-up games and integrated across all units of work. Students are also exploring fractions and decimals, building confidence in connecting these concepts to real-world situations. Throughout the term, they will continue to refine their problem-solving skills by engaging with both open-ended and targeted mathematical challenges.
INTEGRATED
Our Term 4 Integrated unit Creativity has a focus on inventions, both global and Australian. Students will work collaboratively to research, design and advertise a product to be presented to their class Shark Tank panel. Through our unit on Leadership, students will explore and discuss the qualities leaders must have, along with the actions that lead them to success. It is important to recognise these qualities in light of our students heading into their final term as Grade 5 students and the year that lies ahead for them as Grade 6 students and school leaders.
SCHOOL PRODUCTION
Our Grade 5 students have been enthusiastically learning their dance for the upcoming School Production, and the energy in rehearsals has been infectious! With the guidance of our talented instructors, Izzy and Kira, students have grown in confidence, coordination and expression, all while enjoying every moment of learning new moves together. Their teamwork, perseverance and creativity shine through as they prepare for the big performance and we can’t wait to see all their hard work come to life on stage. It is sure to be a highlight of the term.
The rest of Term 4 holds so much promise, and as a team, we are thrilled to see our students stepping confidently into their roles as wonderful Senior School Leaders. Keep shining Grade 5 Students!
