Canberra Camp

Our Year 6 students recently embarked on an exciting and valuable education tour to Australia’s national capital, Canberra. This experience formed a key part of our Inquiry learning, with a strong focus on Civics and Citizenship. In preparation for the camp, students explored Australia’s system of government, the history of Federation, and the key principles of democracy, including how laws are made, the roles of different levels of government, and the responsibilities of citizens.
After a long but enthusiastic journey, students arrived in Canberra, settled into their accommodation, and prepared for a busy and enriching itinerary. Throughout the camp, students participated in a range of engaging educational programs designed to deepen their understanding of Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democratic processes.
Highlights of the itinerary included visiting the Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex, where students explored Australia’s role in global space communication, and the National Capital Exhibition, where they worked collaboratively to design and construct a model of Canberra. This experience supported their understanding of how the national capital is planned and how important institutions and services are organised to support a functioning democracy. Students also visited key national institutions, providing authentic, real-world connections to their classroom learning about government, Federation, and democracy.
These experiences allowed students to see firsth and how Australia’s political system operates and the significance of active and informed citizenship. They were able to connect their learning to real places, people, and processes, making their understanding both meaningful and memorable.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians having the opportunity to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To support families, funding of $45 per student was provided to the school through the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program. This rebate was paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
We are incredibly proud of the way our Year 6 students engaged with this experience and the maturity they demonstrated throughout the camp. This opportunity was a highlight of their final year and a powerful way to bring their learning to life.
