Foundation Curriculum Newsletter - Term 1, Week 8, 2026
Dear Parents/ Caregivers,
We can’t believe it’s already Week 8 and nearing the end of Term 1! It has been such an incredible term filled with so much learning and laughter.
Our Preps have been working hard learning their Sounds-Write sounds, high-frequency words, numbers to 10, and exploring sorting and categorising colours in Maths. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they practise these new skills each day.
We also enjoyed our first incursion, where students took part in fun team-building games and activities. The children did a fantastic job working together, communicating and supporting one another while developing their teamwork skills.
With all of this excitement, it’s safe to say we have some very busy (and slightly tired!) little humans in our classrooms. The Easter break is not too far away, and we are looking forward to finishing the term with more fun learning together.
Date | Event |
| Thursday, 26th March | Spatzenschule Lunch Order Harmony Day Dress Up (Cultural Dress or something orange) |

Literacy
Over the last few weeks in Literacy, students have been exploring a range of nursery rhymes and engaging picture books including Wombat Stew, Pig the Pug, Possum Magic, Edwina the Emu and How the Kangaroos Got Their Tail, as well as nursery rhymes such as It’s Raining, It’s Pouring, Jack Be Nimble, Little Jack Horner, Jack and Jill and Little Miss Muffet. These texts help build students’ listening comprehension, vocabulary and understanding of stories and rhymes.
Students have continued developing their early writing skills through modelled writing and dictation, practising simple sentences such as “Sit, Tam!” and “A man sat on a map.” This supports students to apply the Sounds-Write phonics they have been learning in class.
Through Colourful Semantics activities, students have practised speaking in full sentences, identifying verbs (action words) and constructing simple oral sentences (who/what + what doing). As their confidence grows, they will begin expanding their sentences by adding extra information.
Students have also responded to picture stories by completing sentence stems and drawing their favourite parts, helping them connect their ideas to both spoken and written language. We have also been completing regular Sounds-Write sound assessments to monitor students’ phonics progress.
Together, these activities support students in building confidence in speaking, reading and early writing skills.
Numeracy
Over the last few weeks in Numeracy, students have continued exploring numbers from 0 to 10. They have practised counting, recognising number names, and representing numbers using tools such as ten-frames and number tapes. Students have also learned about the concept of zero, made different groups of objects up to 10, and compared groups to determine more, fewer, and the same. They have explored ideas such as one more and one fewer, helping build a strong understanding of early number relationships.
Students have investigated sorting and surveys, where they sorted objects by attributes such as colour, and learned how to create and read simple picture graphs. These activities help students organise information and begin interpreting data.
To support their number sense, students have participated in problem-solving tasks and hands-on maths games, encouraging them to apply their learning in fun and meaningful ways. Students have begun exploring how numbers can be broken apart and combined, starting with making and breaking apart the numbers 4 and 5.
These activities help develop students’ counting skills, early number understanding, problem-solving and mathematical thinking.
HASS
In HASS, our Prep students explored the ideas of change, time and family through a series of engaging activities. To begin, students took part in a fun “Guess the Baby” game, where they tried to match baby photos with their classmates. This led to rich discussions about how people grow and change over time. Students looked at images of different life stages, baby, toddler, child, teenager and adult and talked about how people develop and what they might like to be when they grow up.
Students then created a simple timeline of their own lives, thinking about how they have changed since they were babies and sharing their hopes for the future. It was wonderful to hear students reflect on their growth and imagine what they might like to do as they get older.
We also explored the concept of families. Students drew pictures of their families and shared how families can look similar or different, helping them understand that every family is unique. To support this learning, we read the story Two Homes by Claire Masurel, which helped students explore the idea that some children may have one home or two homes, and that all family structures are important and valued.
Through these activities, students developed a deeper understanding of change over time, family diversity and the people who are important in their lives, while enjoying the opportunity to share stories about themselves and their families.
Team Building Incursion
Our Prep students recently participated in a Team Building incursion with Supreme Incursions, and what a fantastic time they had! Throughout the session, students rotated through a range of fun, hands-on challenges designed to help them work together, share ideas and support one another.
The children loved taking part in activities such as building towers, completing obstacle-style challenges and working in small groups to solve problems together. These games encouraged students to communicate, take turns, cooperate and think carefully about how they could achieve a goal as a team.
It was wonderful to see our Preps cheering each other on, sharing equipment and celebrating their successes together. Through these exciting activities, students developed important skills including problem-solving, communication, resilience and teamwork, all while having lots of laughs and fun along the way.
The incursion was a fantastic way for our students to practise working collaboratively, building friendships and growing their confidence as learners and team members.
Warmest regards,
Tegan Cochrane, Renee Kociski, Ashleigh Smith and Vanessa Stimar
