Energy Drinks are NOT for Kids

We have seen a number of students coming into school with Energy Drinks or talking about drinking them before school. Energy Drinks are BANNED from the school grounds and are strictly not recommended for children and adolescents by health bodies, including Australian guidelines and VicHealth. They contain excessive amounts of caffeine and sugar that can trigger heart palpitations, severe sleep issues, and behavioural problems in younger bodies.

The Main Risks

Extreme Caffeine: A single 500ml can contain the equivalent caffeine of two strong coffees (up to 160mg+). In children, this can cause rapid heart rate, heightened anxiety, and nervousness.
Hidden Sugar: Some large cans contain up to 21 teaspoons (83.5g) of sugar, vastly exceeding the World Health Organization’s daily recommended limit.
Australian Law: By law, all energy drink labels in Australia are required to state that they are not recommended for children.
No Safe Level: There is no established safe level of caffeine consumption for kids.

VicHealth and State Guidelines

School Bans: Under the Victorian Government's Canteens, Healthy Eating and Other Food Services Policy, energy drinks are classified as high-sugar content drinks and are strictly banned from being sold in Victorian school canteens.
Advocacy & Awareness: Peak health bodies in Victoria and across Australia advocate against the marketing of these drinks to youth and continuously promote healthier beverage choices like water.

If your child or teen is dealing with fatigue or seeking a mental boost for studying, pediatricians recommend focusing on adequate sleep, hydration, and nutrition rather than relying on energy drinks.
