Internship Update

From Ida Gibson (Year 10) at The Ultimate Playground

This week at The Ultimate Playground, we brought the beloved Aussie tale Wombat Stew to life through a magical, multi-sensory nature play experience. On the surface it’s looks like just another book reading. But it’s SO much deeper! The children immersed themselves in storytelling, potion-making, and imaginative role play as we recreated our very own “stews” using beautifully crafted materials — from icy flower bowls filled with sliced fruits and herbs, to sensory jelly infused with specialty teas like hibiscus and chamomile, creating vibrant colours and natural aromas that sparked awe and creativity. We layered in rich storytelling elements with wombat finger puppets, allowing children to immerse themselves in the story. But this wasn’t just about fun (although there was plenty of that!) — it was a powerful, play-based learning experience. This was storytelling reimagined — hands-on, heart-filled, and infused with creativity, nature, and wonder.

A big thank you to Kendelle Laughton the owner of The Ultimate Playground for her mentorship of Ida Gibson Year 10.

Reflection by James Ashton

My Gold Duke of Edinburgh journey has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. From committing my time to an overseas expedition to climbing Mt Moran in Wyoming, every stage pushed me to grow and step beyond my comfort zone.

What began in Year 9 through Cadets—progressing from a cadet to a Corporal and eventually a Cadet Under Officer (CUO) of E Company—evolved into a deeper understanding of discipline, leadership, teamwork, and service. Through this growth, I developed not only new skills but also a greater sense of responsibility and resilience.

Outside of school, working at DG Cycles introduced me to customer service and problem-solving in a real-world setting. It taught me the value of patience and adaptability. My involvement in a wide range of sports further enriched my journey, allowing me to develop a diverse set of physical and interpersonal skills.

One of the most defining moments of this experience was climbing Mt Moran. The physical and mental challenges of the ascent tested my limits, but reaching the summit was incredibly rewarding. It gave me time to reflect on the journey so far and appreciate the unique opportunities that the Duke of Edinburgh Award has offered me.

This program has encouraged personal growth, adventure, and dedication. I am deeply grateful for the experiences and challenges it presented—each one has shaped who I am today.
