English Term 3

Term 3 Focus:
Reading Focus:
This term, our children will continue developing their reading fluency and comprehension through a variety of rich texts and learning experiences. Our class novel The Wild Robot will be a key focus, alongside weekly spelling lessons and mini-lessons exploring text features, tone, viewpoint, and author’s voice. Our children will also take part in structured reading groups, including teacher-led sessions, targeted spelling practice, technology based tasks, and Book Club discussions. Individual reading boxes and library routines will continue to help support independent reading choices and engagement.
Writing Focus:
In writing, we will explore a variety of genres, beginning withnews reports. Our children will learn to identify different points of view, analyse language choices, and use features such as headlines, direct and reported speech, and figurative language to inform and engage readers. We’ll then move into persuasive writing, where we will learn to express opinions, back up arguments with evidence, and consider counterarguments. Later in the term, we’ll shift our focus to narrative writing, using snapshots and short stories to develop emotive language and vivid descriptions. Across all genres, our children will continue to refine their grammar, sentence structure, and writing style.
Spelling Focus:
This term in spelling, we are focusing on morphology and suffixes to strengthen their understanding of how words are built and how meanings change. Each week, we will explore common suffixes such as -ed, -ing, -ful, -less, -er, -est, and more complex endings like -tion and -ible. Along the way, our children will review important spelling rules (like dropping the ‘e’ or doubling consonants), learn how suffixes can change a word’s tense or word class, and discover how spelling patterns connect to meaning.
