Mathematics Term 3

Mathematics Focus – Term 3

This term in Mathematics, we’re diving into a range of engaging topics that build on key number and problem-solving skills. We’ll begin with a revision of the four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division – to strengthen fluency and accuracy.

In algebra, our children will explore the relationship between multiplication and division as inverse operations. They'll also work on solving equations with unknown values, including those with brackets. A big focus will be on creating and experimenting with algorithms, identifying patterns, and using digital tools to explore factors, multiples, and divisibility rules.

Our measurement and geometry unit will focus on angles – estimating, measuring, constructing, and understanding the relationships between different types of angles, including angles on a straight line and vertically opposite angles.

In space, our children will learn to use grid coordinates to describe position and movement. They’ll also explore the cartesian plane, locating points in all four quadrants and describing how coordinates change when a point is moved.

In probability, we’ll be exploring chance and likelihood. We will conduct chance experiments, record outcomes, and use fractions, decimals, and percentages to describe and compare the probability of events. They’ll also use digital tools to run simulations and observe how outcomes change over multiple trials.

It’s a very fun and engaging term that will be filled with exciting mathematical thinking, and we’re excited to see our children build confidence and make strong connections across topics!

Our approach to teaching is based on meeting each child's individual learning needs. This may involve solo activities, collaborative group work, targeted lessons, or tailored 'clinic groups' designed to either support or challenge learners.

Throughout all these areas, our children will focus on developing four key mathematical proficiencies: understanding, fluency, problem solving, and reasoning. Each concept explored will help strengthen one or more of these proficiencies.

We’re excited for a term full of hands-on, engaging learning opportunities!
