R U OK? Day

A Simple Question That Can Change a Life

R U OK? Day is a special day across Australia that reminds us to check in with the people around us and ask, “Are you OK?” It’s about showing care, starting conversations, and making sure no one feels alone when life is tough. This year, R U OK? Day will be held nationally on Thursday, 11 September 2025, but at Oakleigh Primary School we will celebrate this on a different day that week, with activities that focus on kindness, gratitude, and connection. More details coming soon on Compass.

Why It Matters

Primary school is a time when children are learning about feelings, friendships, and how to show empathy. R U OK? Day gives us the chance to help students practise noticing when someone might be feeling sad or left out, and to respond with kindness and care. It reminds children that small actions - like asking a friend if they’re OK or inviting them to join in - can make a big difference. Most importantly, it teaches them that while friends can listen and support, it’s always best to talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent, carer, or teacher, when someone needs extra help.

What We’re Doing at School

This year, OPS will celebrate R U OK? Day with activities designed to promote kindness, listening, and gratitude:

  • Wellbeing Wall: Students and staff will each write one thing they are grateful for. These messages will be displayed in the front office for everyone to see.
  • Splash of Yellow: Students and staff are encouraged to wear a touch of yellow (students may add accessories alongside their yellow OPS uniform) to brighten the day and show support.
  • Classroom Video: Through the week, classes will watch a short video explaining what R U OK? Day is about and how we can all support each other.

Through these activities, we hope to give children simple, practical tools they can use to care for themselves and others.

How Families Can Get Involved

The conversation doesn’t stop at the school gate. Families can support R U OK? Day by:

  • Asking children open questions such as: “What colour was your day and why?” or “Who was kind to you today?”
  • Talking about who the trusted adults are in your child’s life, both at home and at school.
  • Modelling kindness - sometimes the smallest gestures, like checking in on a neighbour or friend, can have the biggest impact.
