Wellbeing Story Time

By Ryo Sugihara

Picture story books often open up conversations and learning opportunities for what might be complex and hard-to-tackle concepts for children. This is true for conversations about mental health issues, which can at times feel awkward or be challenging to discuss. In this series, I will be introducing you to picture story books which will not only entertain but introduce children to a range of mental health issues which they or someone they know might experience.

Ravi’s Roar

Have you ever felt the urge to just… ROAR!! Sometimes the smallest frustrations can pile out to the point that it brings us to a massive explosion – and you’re not alone. Meet Ravi. A gentle, understanding and patient boy who has had too much. He lets his anger get the better of him… and he learns the consequences of his actions. How can we deal with our building anger in a healthy and safe way?

After listening to the story, you could…

  • Create a list of things that indicate your frustration is building. Create it together with someone you trust and share this with each other. That way you know there is someone looking out for you and can help you before you have your tiger moment!
  • Practise anger management strategies such as breathing and grounding techniques. This way when you have a tiger moment, you can quickly put these strategies into action.
  • Create tiger masks and pretend you’re an angry tiger! Role play how you would make healthy and safe choices even when you have your tiger moment.
