Year 5/6 News

Learning Centre Four

It feels like we are all in a tornado this term with the exciting things happening. We would like to praise all of the students in LC4 with how well they have all adapted to all the changes in the timetable to fit in practice for the Wizard of Oz school production - they are showing great resilience. Also, a big thank you to the families who joined our Year 6 students for the Confirmation Family Evening last week. We are all looking forward to Mass this Sunday to witness the students be Confirmed. All are welcome and we hope to see you there!

Year 5

Literacy:

Week 3 the Year 5s were excited to have Kate and Jol Temple visit and participate in a workshop. Students learnt about what goes into writing and illustrating a book and how to draw their own characters. We continued reading Kate and Jol Temple books, reading Room on our rock, which can be read forward and backwards and looking at different perspectives.

Week 4, we began to prepare for Bookweek by exploring Bookweek shortlisted books. Which included learning about beetles and exploring the difference of living in a bus or a home. Students also began PhOrMes which is a spelling and vocabulary program we are introducing at our school.

Numeracy:

Angles have been the focus in numeracy. Students have been classifying and naming angles, with some groups measuring angles using a protractor or constructing angles. We have looked for angles in our classroom and environments.

Inquiry:

Lights, Camera, Action! A big focus for Inquiry this semester is the production of The Wizard of Oz. It is coming along amazingly well and we are very proud of the effort everyone has put in. When they are not rehearsing, students are developing their own media news report, they are developing either a newspaper, TV news report, radio news report or Podcast. They have finished the planning stage and will begin producing their reports.

Religion

In Religion, we have explored different Psalms. We looked at versions from the book of Psalms. Unpacking some of the vocab and meaning. Then we explored other versions of the Psalm and images we can relate to each one.

Wellbeing:

In week 3 we explored moods, what influences our moods and what things we could do to regulate our moods by developing a mood tool kit.

Week 4 was National Week Against Bullying. Students learnt what it means to ‘Be Bold. Be Kind. Speak Up.’

Special Events:

Year 5s were very lucky to get to work with their Preps buddies on their 99th day of school to help prepare them for the preps 100th day of school.

Year 6

Literacy(Uche & Aubriana)

This week students have been exploring all about how to write their own information text and the parts of an information text. Students have been researching facts all about the topic of seals, and figuring how to write it and organise it effectively. This helped them improve how they write an information text in a clear, organised and engaging way.

The main highlights of the term so far was that the creative authors' named Kate and Jol temple came to visit the school. Kate and Jol were very engaging, fun, and creative Authors. They have spoken about their  journey of how they became Authors , and how they got ideas for writing books. They even showed the students how to draw one on their characters, G-Chip from the new book 'Mega Rich Guinea Pigs'. All of the students had loads of fun and were bursting with questions to ask Kate and Jol Temple.

Numeracy(Cassandra & Shenarie)

This week our brilliant mathematicians are on a mission to uncover the secrets hidden behind angles. They have been developing their understanding of acute, obtuse, reflex, and right angles, practising accurate angle drawing, and exploring the concepts of interior and exterior angles. They have figured out how to divide a right angle into two complementary angles,  identifying angles at a point, identifying unknown angles using complementary angles and more! Using protractors, students identified and measured angles in real-life examples, then applied their knowledge to calculate missing angles in a variety of contexts. Through these activities, they strengthened their skills in measurement, reasoning, and mathematical communication, while building confidence in approaching complex problems. It has been a highly engaging and productive week, with students showing both precision and persistence in their learning.

Inquiry(Nirav & Tanmay)

Over the past two weeks, Year 6 has been on a mission to become animal detectives! Armed with a “challenging collection” of creatures,  from emus and kookaburras to camels, octopi, and even redback spiders, they’ve been figuring out how scientists group living things. The students have been using decision trees to ask clever yes or no questions like:

  • Does it have a backbone?
  • Does it lay eggs?
  • Does it have feathers, scales, or fur?

It’s been wonderful to watch them work together, debate their ideas, and sometimes laugh in surprise when an animal ends up in a group they didn’t expect. This activity hasn’t just been about science, it’s been about problem-solving, teamwork, and looking closely at the amazing variety of life around us.

Religion(Jody & Kivi)

In Year 6 Religion we are learning and exploring the life of Saul, who later became known as Paul. Saul was once someone who didn’t believe in Jesus and even tried to stop others from following Him. But one day, he had a powerful experience that changed his life forever. He saw a bright light and heard Jesus speak to him, which helped him understand the truth about God’s love. After that, Saul became Paul and spent the rest of his life teaching people about Jesus and spreading kindness. Learning about Paul helps us understand how people can change and how important it is to forgive and follow what we believe is right.

Wellbeing

Week four is National Week Against Bullying. Students looked at what it means to ‘Be Bold,  Be Kind, Be Safe and Speak Up.’ In year 6 we focused on creating anti-bullying slogans around the values of this school and this week.

Special Events:

Students preparing for the sacrament of Confirmation participated in a Spirituality day last week, as well as had their families join them in the evening. They also created icons of their chosen saints, which will be displayed during the mass. We wish them all the very best as they take the next step in their spiritual journey this Sunday the 17th.

On Thursday 14th, our Year 6 Girls Hockey team competed in another round of competition at the regional level. Although they were unsuccessful in progressing further, they played two great matches and represented our school with determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The girls should be proud of their efforts and the way they supported each other throughout the day.
