Year 3/4 News

Learning Centre Two
Wow! What a busy few weeks we have had in LC2. Highlights include:
- the session with authors Jol and Kate Temple and learning how to draw G-Chip
- joining other schools online for the Inform & Empower workshop on Cyberbullying
- being a part of the National Week of Action against Bullying
- exploring the book week books and
- eagerly practicing for our production of the Wizard of Oz
All of this and it's only the end of Week 4!!!
Wizard of Oz
Our performance is fast approaching. We are having a full dress rehearsal next Wednesday. We need students to come to school in their costumes on Wednesday (so there is no changing of clothes at school). They will stay in their costumes for the day (they may bring trackies or a jumper to go over it for warmth if needed).
Religion
The Year 3 students have been exploring the parable of 'The Lost Sheep'. Jesus told this story to show that God loves us even when we make mistakes. The parable shows that every person is important to God.
Over the last two weeks the Year 4 students have been learning about Australia’s First Saint, Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop. The students looked at how she started the sisters of Saint Joseph and built many schools all over Australia. Providing an education to students regardless of their religion or wealth. Students reflected on her importance to others, the wider community and themselves.
Literacy
The Year 3 and Year 4 students have been looking at some of the book week short listed books and have enjoyed unpacking the messages and responding to these books in a creative way. We got to make our own webs with pipe cleaners after reading Spiro, a book about perseverance. We wrote a letter to our future self whilst exploring 'These Long Loved Things' which was a heartfelt story about bringing back memories. We became artists after exploring 'A Leaf for Greaf. The illustrations are amazing, swirls of colour cross each page giving impressions of forest and hills, of the cold wind and warmth of the sun. We look forward to reading more of these books next week as we celebrate Book Week.
Mathematics
Our Year 3 students have been learning to identify angles as measures of turn and use right angles as a reference to compare angles in everyday situations. We have been labelling the parts of an angle and drawing right angles on grid paper using perpendicular lines.
This week we have begun to explore time reading analogue clocks to the hour, half hour as well as quarter to and quarter past the hour.
Year 4's have also been learning about angles, we learnt all 7 angles including right, obtuse, acute, straight, reflex and revolution angles. We have been going around our learning space seeing how many right angles we can find. We have enjoyed learning how to use a set square. creating angles using icypole sticks and drawing angles in our Maths books.
Inquiry
In Inquiry we’ve been learning how to branch up a new password, make new questions for our guess who game and sorting games. We’ve been getting in groups to do most of our work this term. We’ve been learning to be safe online so no hackers or scammers get to us.
One time we were doing a balloon debate about if AI (Artificial Intelligence) is it good for the world or BAD for the world. We are learning to follow a branching database to organise information using a series of yes/no questions to classify objects.
Wellbeing
Students have been unpacking what it means to Be Bold, Be Kind and Speak Up. We linked the message with our school values and created posters about what each statement means to remind us we can all make a difference.
Responsibility = Be Bold: Choose to do what is right
Respect = Be Kind: Choose to be kind
Resilience = Speak up: Choose to take action
We contributed to the whole school display by tracing our hands for the flowers and creating the colourful rainbow.
Book Week
Next Monday is the beginning of Book Week. Students are invited to come to school dressed up as a favourite character or something related to reading books. The Book Week theme this year is 'Book an Adventure'. Students can also choose to wear something to do with adventure or even just wear colourful party clothes to celebrate their love of books.
The parade will be held in the school hall at 9 am on Monday 18th of August, and all families are invited to attend.
As part of our book week celebrations we are having a guess how many bookworms are in the jar. Students can have a guess for 50c. All money raised will be donated to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation
Tissues Please
We are in desperate need of tissues in the learning spaces. It would be great if each family could donate a box please.

- Students bring their laptops and headphones to school each day. Please make sure these are fully charged.
- Please make sure that ALL your children's belongings (clothes, lunch boxes, drink bottles, stationery, etc.) are clearly labelled with your child's name. Labelled property can be easily returned to its owner.
