French Crepe Day

This week, we continued our French celebrations with our Jour de Crêpes (French Pancake Day) for all our Year 8, 9 and 10 French students. They participated wonderfully by ordering their crêpes in French, perfecting their pronunciation with the help of crêpière Margaux and the Crêpes Jeannette team. Following this, students displayed their sporting prowess in a few games of French boules (also known as la pétanque). Une belle journée pour tous!

Year 8 Parent-Led Father's Day Initiative – NICU Support at RNSH

A compassionate Year 8 parent has taken the lead in a heartwarming initiative to support fathers whose children are receiving care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH). Recognising the emotional toll on fathers who work full days and then spend their evenings at the hospital, the parent reached out to our school community to help make Father's Day a little brighter for these dedicated dads.

The response was overwhelming and showcased the incredible power of community collaboration:

  • Budgy Smuggler generously donated custom-designed socks, adding a personal and fun touch to the gifts.

  • Haigh’s Chocolates Chatswood contributed 50 personalised chocolates, offering a sweet moment of comfort.

  • Chatswood RSL donated $1,000, which was used to purchase thoughtful gifts for the fathers.

  • Year 8 students and parents enthusiastically created handmade cards and brought in additional gifts, showing heartfelt support and creativity.

This initiative not only brought joy to the fathers in the NICU but also highlighted the strength and compassion of our school community. It’s a beautiful reminder of what we can achieve when we come together with empathy and purpose.

The Francis Webb Centenary Edition

To mark the centenary of Francis Webb’s birth, students Mac and Jasper joined 12 distinguished poet-readers (including recipients of the Prime Minister’s Poetry Award) to honour the legacy of one of Australia’s greatest poets and St Pius X College’s most famous old boy.

The event was hosted by Dr Toby Davidson, a leading expert on Webb’s work, who spoke passionately about Webb’s poetic genius, his courage in addressing taboo subjects, and the Christian mysticism that shaped his poetry. Webb’s Catholic upbringing and knowledge of the Scriptures forming the foundation of his own sacred journey expressed in his poetry.

Jasper, from Lewo, read To a Poet, while our College’s representative, Mac, read This Runner. Drawing on his own experience as a runner, Mac connected deeply with the poem’s rhythm and visceral imagery; 'This runner on his final lap sucks wildly for elusive air.' His sensitive reading was a proud moment for the College and as the first reader, set the tone for a memorable celebration of Webb’s poetry.
