Junior Secondary Program
What a busy and exciting Term 3 it has been for our Junior Secondary Classes!
Here's what they've been learning and exploring:
English
The students have been looking at different jobs including farmers, firefighters, nurses, and chefs through engaging non-fiction texts. Their learning was really strengthened when we had a paramedic incursion.
The class has been enjoying regular trips to the school library where they can select books of interest for their independent reading tubs. We've also been exploring handwriting and sentence formation through colourful semantics and predictable chart writing.
Maths
Our students have been developing real life transferable maths skills through our cooking program. They've been busy with data collection by asking their peers questions and going on scavenger hunts around the school, tallying the number of insects they can find. The class has also been exploring number lines and practising moving up and down number lines.
Science
The students have been exploring solids, liquids, and gases through hands-on experiments. These have included using balloons filled with water, air and frozen water, melting chocolate (tough job, but someone had to do it!), and making ice cream - always a class favourite!
It's been wonderful to see the students so engaged in their learning across all subject areas. Well done, Junior Secondary Green!
HVS Senior Pathways
Business Enterprise module - Plastics Program
The next step in our Plastics Program adventure involved meeting with Adam Slater, founder of Zero Plastics Australia, via Zoom last week. This was a great opportunity for our students to gain insight into Adam's Ballarat studio, his design process, see all his cool plastics recycling machinery in action, ask questions and see themselves up on a giant tv screen! Adam really got us thinking about what new products we want to create and sell, made from ALL the plastic lids our amazing school community is saving from landfill... watch this space!
Future Pathways module - Laundry Program
Our Future Pathways students have been running the Laundry Program this year, where they collect, sort, wash, dry, fold, and deliver laundry items throughout the whole school - phew! Beginning with basic equipment identification, students have progressed to operating washing machines and dryers with greater confidence. Great work team!
Business Enterprise module - Cafe Program
Each week our senior secondary students run the Cafe Program where they deliver order forms to staff, collect money via cash and EFTPOS, bake chocolate chip cookies and make hot drinks to order using a commercial coffee machine and grinder. And of course all orders are sent out in our amazing HVS x Fressko reusable cups!
Which brings us to our latest news... HVS x Fressko reusable cups are now available in NAVY! Our first run of beautiful Clover green cups have almost sold out, so senior students decided to place a follow up order with our good friends at Fressko. Still spill-proof, lightweight, and insulated stainless steel that keeps drinks hot or cold. Featuring our school logo, all sales go towards the Senior Pathways Program. Available to purchase from the office for $39.95, but don't sleep...
