Junior Years Learning Community

Junior Years - Term 3 - Weeks 5 and 6

Foundation

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been learning the sound-symbol correspondences for ‘ch’, ‘v’, ‘x’ and ‘y’. We have also been focussing on reading and writing tricky words ‘like’, ‘very’, ‘do’, ‘as’ and ‘put’. The students have also been learning about vowel sounds and names. Almost all of the words that we read and write need at least one of these vowels.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been learning about length, mass and capacity. The students have been learning the difference between height and length. The students have been comparing objects in the classroom using the language taller, shorter and longer.

Religion

In Religion, our topic is, ‘Our Bible’. Students have been learning about why the Bible is a special book for Christians and that there are many different stories that teach us about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

Inquiry

In Inquiry our topic is, ‘What makes our body work?’. We have been learning about different body parts and their names.

At home you could reinforce learning by:

  • Listening to your child read their reader each night.
  • Practice reading and writing tricky words found in the back of the Home Reading Diary.
  • Practice handwriting lowercase letters of the alphabet.
  • Practice writing the diagraphs ‘ch’, ‘sh’, ‘ee’, ‘ck’, ‘ll’, ‘ss’, ‘ff’, ‘qu’ and ‘zz’.
  • Find objects within your home that are taller than you and shorter than you.

Year One

Literacy

In Literacy, we have been learning about contractions. We are learning to turn two words into one such as: I am - I’m did not – didn't  cannot - can't We have been focusing on spelling tricky words can’t, don’t and didn’t.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been learning about sharing collections. This sharing of collections can be represented as an array. The students have been identifying the number of groups needed for equal sharing. Students have been solving problems using concrete materials such as counters to practice this skill.

Religion

Religion our topic is, ‘Jesus’ story. We have been learning about different stories in the bible and exploring our favourite Jesus stories.

Inquiry

In Inquiry our topic is, ‘What makes our body work?’. We have been making and labelling our body parts on a skeleton.

At home you could reinforce learning by:

  • Listening to your child read their reader each night.
  • Practice spelling our tricky words (can't, didn't, I’m) and writing them in sentences.
  • Practice handwriting on dotted thirds lines.
  • Suggest other contractions and ask students to write them down.
  • Can you share the following collections into equal groups: 8, 10, 16 and 20. For example, 12 can be equally shared into 2 groups of 6, 3 groups of 4, or 4 groups of 3.

Words such as “and, but, or, because & so”).  We are focusing on the main idea and summarising an imaginative text for comprehension.  Our focus tricky words are though, can’t, don’t, around, could and couldn’t.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been focusing on identifying, sorting and problems solving using 2D and 3D shapes. We are learning about using bar models to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems.

Religion

In Religion our topic is, Jesus’ story. We have been learning about different stories in the bible and exploring our favourite Jesus stories.

Inquiry
