K-4 LUNCHTIME CLUBS

This term at St Luke’s we have launched lunch time clubs as an additional optional opportunity for students to engage in. This initiative is made possible by the generosity of staff to facilitate an activity during their lunch break - in addition to their regular rostered playground duties across the week.

The clubs operate across Monday to Friday, with various activities and grades assigned on different days.

The Term 4 offerings include:

Mini Lego, Board Games, Mindful Colouring In, Soccer, Basketball and Drawing.

The feedback from both students and teachers has been very positive.

Students still continue to enjoy access to their regular play spaces and for those seeking quieter pursuits, the Respite Room and Hub provide opportunities for reading, drawing, puzzles and card games including Uno.

The addition of Lunchtime clubs provides another layer of support and opportunity for our students that aligns with our MTSS (Multi Tiered Support System) approaches to support behaviour and wellbeing needs.

Thank you for your continued support as in partnership we can achieve great things for our children.

Religion

This term in Religion students are exploring the nature and distinctive characteristics of the parish as a Catholic community of Christian people who celebrate, serve and grow in faith and love together. Students will also be learning from Scripture stories

such as Where two or three gather I am there (Mt 18:19-20)In the coming weeks, the students will learn about the sacramental objects in the Church and how each object has a special meaning and purpose. Furthermore, the students will have opportunities to reflect on their understanding by participating in liturgical celebrations within the school community at St Luke’s

Maths

In Maths students are continuing to demonstrate their understanding of Whole Number. As a warmup, the students have worked in pairs using a bead string and dice to build on from the number 10. They make the number using the correct number of beads and explain to their buddy how they know they are showing the correct number. For example; I have 10 and I know 8 more makes 18.

The students are becoming so efficient with counting on and number recognition.

English - Kangas

In English, Kindergarten students have been learning about procedural writing. Kindergarten has seen the teachers model ‘how to make fairy bread’, ‘celery changing colour’ and even ‘how to play silent ball.’ They have used this information to write procedures. At the moment we are learning to use time connectives and add as much detail in their writing as possible, for their audience to be able to follow with as much accuracy.

English -Roos

In Kindergarten the Roos students have furthered their understanding of Developmental Play. Developmental play helps to build a student’s creativity and their ability to come up with unique and interesting ideas. Developmental play also helps students to expand their social and emotional skills and in particular, their oral language.  Students are learning to write a combination of simple and compound sentences based on their experience of play. They refine their sentence writing using specific vocabulary (linked to play) and descriptive language (adjectives). During and after the  play sessions students have the opportunity to discuss their play experience with their peers and teachers.

Geography

In Geography, Kindergarten students have been learning about special places and what makes them meaningful. They began by exploring a special place within their home and then looked at places in their community, such as parks and shops. The students also discussed how they can care for these places and tried to identify these places on a simple map.

Stage 1, T4, W4

English

In English, students have been exploring poetry and poetic devices. As part of our writing, students have been working with a partner to co-construct their own poems using the poetic devices of alliteration and rhyme. The students have explored how poetry can be used to express feelings, emotions and humor.

Mathematics

In Mathematics we have been learning to understand and demonstrate the length of objects to find halves and quarters. Students have been using practical hands-on tasks to explore different strategies to find fractions of lengths for shapes and objects. Classroom discussion has been on what are equal half, equal quarters and what are not equal halves/quarters. Also, We are learning to use the structure of equal groups to solve multiplication and division problems, focusing on the number of groups, the number in each group, and finding half of a collection.

Science

In Science, our Year 2 students have been enthusiastically exploring digital technology! They have been engaging in programming basics by designing algorithms and experimenting with coding techniques, using grid paper and maps to bring these concepts to life. Through engaging STEM lessons, they have also had the chance to code with Bee Bots, developing problem-solving and critical-thinking skills as they bring their own coding creations to life. This hands-on approach is building their understanding of technology and inspiring a love for innovation.

Religion

In Religion, students are exploring the driving question, ‘How can we be peacemakers in our world?’ They will learn that every choice they make impacts their lives and the lives of those around them, encouraging them to act with kindness and responsibility. By looking at scripture, the students will discover stories of God’s love for His people and see how building relationships is at the heart of being a peacemaker. Through the teachings of Jesus, students will learn about mercy and forgiveness and how these values help us bring peace into our communities. They also explore the Sacrament of Reconciliation, understanding it as a Sacrament of healing and love that restores peace in our hearts and with others. This journey will allow them to realise that even small acts of compassion can make a difference in creating a more peaceful world.

PE Sport

In Year 1 and Year 2, the students have been learning to play fairly in groups and share equipment. They have also been learning to recall their skills from previous years and follow a sequence in a range of activities and games. This was completed by playing games with bean bags and throwing into a specific target, and also practicing their throwing and rolling skills with tennis balls. Students worked in groups to create their own target games with selected equipment including hoops, cones, bean bags, soccer balls and pink soft balls. Along with this, each sport lesson, students complete a warm up game of their choice. This ranges from survival tag, bull rush, waspital tag and pacman.

Drama and Arts:

Stage one students have been learning about the idea of acting out different characters and retelling a story through dramatic play. We have been learning about acting the characters in our story “Room On The Broom”  and how to retell the story. We have created a storytelling book about the story and we have been learning about each character in the story, what their voices are, their body language, their facial expressions and their personality. We have so much fun acting each and every character. The students have been working on their book to color, cut out and glue the characters to make craft sticks and act out in a puppet show.
