Head of Sport Report
Last week, both on the playground and during training sessions, I had the opportunity to speak with several students about communication. In particular, we discussed how important it is for players to keep their coaching staff and MICs (Master in Charge) informed about any issues related to training sessions or games.
Team sports rely on commitment, discipline, and collaboration. When players are unable to attend a training session or a game, it doesn’t just affect their personal development—it can also impact the entire team. Whether it’s adjusting game moves, planning strategies, or ensuring that everyone is prepared, clear communication allows us to adapt and continue improving as a team.
It has been pleasing to see that these conversations have already made a difference. Over the past week, I have begun receiving emails in advance from students who need to miss training sessions or leave early due to other commitments. This shift sees students taking responsibility for themselves, and it highlights how communication is not just a skill for the field, but a life skill that will serve them well beyond their time at BMGS.
I would like to commend those students who have taken the initiative to communicate early and responsibly. Moving forward, I encourage everyone to continue this practice and remember that open communication is the key to success. Whether it’s about attendance, concerns, or ideas for improvement, your input matters, and it helps us build stronger, more united teams.
Let’s continue to set the standard for excellence - both on and off the field.
Congratulations
Orienteering
The Australian School Orienteering Championships were held last month. Each state plus New Zealand competed in the championships which were held around Armidale.
Competitions comprised a sprint event around The Armidale School, then the classic long bush event and the relay. The event ran over three days.
Alton Freeman was the junior boys champion for the second year running. He also posted the quickest time of any runner in the relay and finished 6th in the Sprint event. His NSW teammates also performed well, gaining first place as the overall state winner, as well as winning all the categories except junior girls.
An Australian honour team of 16 athletes was selected and included Alton and 3 of his NSW teammates.
This is a great achievement, congratulations Alton and we look forward to hearing of your continued success.

Pre-Season Basketball Report
Girls First V
Saturday morning saw the girls Firsts basketball team gather at Sydney Uni for a pre-season tournament to enable all teams to play short games against one another and get some practise in. This is a relatively new team with players from Year 11, 10 and 9. Coach T put together line ups for each of the 5 games they played throughout the day with each break seeing the girls running drills and practising set plays to be reassured to tackle the season head on. The girls started off against the strongest team of the competition and remained incredibly competitive! As the day went on, the girls got better and stronger on the court with some magic passing, screens and shots. Their defensive game became tighter and more confident. The girls finished off the day with a great win (and sadly a couple of injuries) showing their continued improvement! Well done girls - looking forward to a great season!
First V Boys
The First Boys Basketball squad recently participated in a preseason tournament at Oakhill College, offering valuable preparation for the upcoming season. The team's first game was a mix of highs and lows, revealing necessary areas for improvement. In their second game, the boys showed remarkable progress with higher energy, better teamwork, and improved execution of offensive plays. Unfortunately, the third game saw a return to earlier struggles with organisation, teamwork, and energy. However, the team ended the tournament positively with a constructive discussion, focusing on critical improvements needed for their first game of the season.
