STEM News
Dear fellow scientists,
We hope you all enjoyed a refreshing break during the school holidays.
Prep students are exploring how different people and animals move, including actions like hopping, jumping, slithering, gliding, and walking. They also engaged in matching animals to their corresponding movement.
Grade 1 students are discovering Earth’s resources in our environment, including water, metals, plants, animals, and soil. They took a science walk around the school to observe the use of these resources.
Grade 2 students are learning to recognise items that can be recycled. They have been observing the recycling process for plastic and created a T-chart in their workbooks labelled ‘Recyclable’ and ‘Non- Recyclable’, sorting objects into categories. Watch this video to show how different materials are recycled: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlRVPum9cp4
Grade 3 students are showcasing their understanding of night and day by creating annotated drawings on the topic. They also recorded and graphed the class’s perceptions of where the sun goes at night. Watch this video to understand how some Aboriginal people believe our Moon was created https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9BBZz9qSvE
Grade 4 students are developing a game centred on life cycles, marsupials, or food chains. They are encouraged to use QR codes for inspiration, follow their plans, handle materials safely, consider sustainability in their resource use, and evaluate both their own game and those created by other groups. Here is a video for you to watch on food chains: https://www.clickview.net/primary/videos/51730340/what-is-a-food-chain
Grade 5 students are learning how we perceive the colours of objects. They illustrated diagrams in their workbooks to demonstrate how we see objects and their colours. Our Grade 5 students participated in an exciting educational program called 'Expedition to M.A.R.S Base' at the Victorian Space Science Education Centre, located at Strathmore Secondary College. They engaged in activities that helped them understand and appreciate the roles of NASA professionals, such as engineers and astronauts. The students also worked on problem-solving tasks using programmable robots.
Grade 6 students are exploring how volcanoes impact the Earth’s surface, examining both the positive and negative effects. They are using evidence to support their opinions on whether volcanoes are ‘creators’ or ‘destroyers’.
