Grade 5 Community News

Dear Year 5 families,

Welcome back for the final term of the school year. We hope you had a wonderful and relaxing holiday break.

Reading

This term, we will begin our reading unit with the text ‘Wonder’ written by R.J Palacio. The book follows a boy named ‘August’ who is living with a facial deformity. The students will explore the challenges that August faces and the differing perspectives of those around him. The students will engage in ‘turn and talk’ conversations and respond to questions using a read, write and discuss format. We look forward to analysing the themes of the book and finding out more about August as a character.

Writing

In writing, the students will begin with a unit based on poetry. In the first two weeks of the term the students will analyse and identify the elements from a variety of narrative poems and also have the opportunity to plan and create their own poems. They will also explore how R.J Palacio uses poetry in Wonder to engage his audience. We look forward to seeing and reading the amazing poems that the students create.

Mathematics

In mathematics, the students will begin with a unit based on Patterns and Algebra. In the first two weeks of term the students will describe, continue & create number patterns, as well as identifying the rule of the patterns. They will also work on balancing equations and explore variables in mathematics. We look forward to seeing their problem-solving skills come alive during this unit.

Vocabulary

In vocabulary, the students will be learning 6 new words each week from text ‘Wonder’. Students look at the meaning of the words, synonyms and antonyms for the words, and how to use the words in sentences. They are then using these words in their writing and reading.

Health

In health, the students will be introduced to a different subject area each week. Last week we focused on our identity and what influence people and places have on our identity. This week, we will be focusing on our community and how we can seek support if we need it.

Thank you so much for your support,
