In the classroom

Foundation - Grade 1

Foundation/Grade 1s have been busy building our knowledge of letters and sounds. It’s exciting now as the Foundations are beginning to read decodable readers with this week seeing them take home their first book that they can read to their families. Our Grade ones have learnt what an adjective is and how it is used to make our nouns sound even better. Last week we celebrated National Simultaneous reading day with our class listening to the story “The Truck Cat” at the same time as others around our country. The children enjoyed making their own butterflies and talking about symmetry in the process. During our maths lessons we have been looking at creating numbers in many ways such as using blocks, counters, ten frame. We have also looked at breaking our numbers up in different ways (partitioning) but still ending up with the same whole number.

Grade 1 / 2

Grade 1/2 have had lots of fun measuring items around the room using pencils, our hands, paper clips and blocks. We finished our unit on Pentecost and talked about how we can be Spirit filled people in our world.

In Inquiry we are working on learning to tie our shoelaces and working on developing our teamwork skills when playing different games.

Grade 3/4 Highlights

Grade 3/4 have been enjoying the amazing illustrations and comical storyline of the Roland Harvey anthology called Off We Go Around Australia. We have been taken on a rich journey of text and illustrations that have been a joy to explore. The students planned their artwork, painted a watercolour background and finished off with their detailed drawings.

Grade 4/5

Over the past fortnight the Year 4/5 class have been working on building Skyscrapers. This is related to our class book How Was That Built. In the book it explains in detail how different landmarks were built and what their specific design process are to be able to stand for as long as they have.

Grade 6

This week, the Grade 6’s got an amazing opportunity to attend the dress rehearsal of the “Rock of Ages” production at SMOTA. Students were extremely excited to see fellow St Francis students in the play and enjoyed the entire production.

In Literacy, students have continued building our vocabulary wall in the classroom with new words from The Silver Donkey. We have looked at different figurative techniques that we will soon implement in our own Fables near the end of term.

In Maths, students have continued working on Operations. We recently made times table/ division resources that have assisted our students with their learning. We will soon look at solving equations with brackets next week.
