Learning in Action: English & Maths in the NSW Curriculum

At St Anthony's, we strive to create engaging and supportive learning environments that help students build essential skills in English and Mathematics. This term, we’ve been focusing on key aspects of the NSW curriculum that develop problem-solving, creativity, and confidence in our learners.

English: Building Strong Communicators

Our students have been exploring reading, writing, speaking, and listening—essential components of literacy development. Guided reading sessions and storytelling activities are helping students expand their vocabulary, improve comprehension, and express themselves with clarity. Writing tasks encourage creativity, from crafting narratives to writing persuasive texts. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation are also key areas of focus, ensuring students can communicate effectively across different subjects and real-world contexts.

Mathematics: Developing Thinkers & Problem-Solvers

In Maths, we have been tackling number concepts, measurement, geometry, and patterns. Students are strengthening their understanding of operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—while engaging in hands-on problem-solving tasks. Real-world applications, like interpreting data and measuring objects, help students see the relevance of Maths in daily life. Games and interactive activities ensure learning is enjoyable and meaningful!

Supporting Learning at Home

Parents and caregivers play a crucial role in reinforcing classroom learning. Reading together, discussing stories, and encouraging creative writing can boost literacy skills.

In Maths, playing board games, measuring ingredients while cooking, or spotting patterns in nature are fantastic ways to build mathematical thinking outside of school.
