Parent Maths Information Session & Open Night Success
Thank you to all the families who joined us for the Parent Maths Information Session last Tuesday. The session provided an engaging and informative overview of how we teach maths at Skye Primary, guided by current research in cognitive science and our evidence-based instructional model. Parents gained an understanding of how working memory (our brain’s short-term “notepad”) and long-term memory (our mental “library”) influence how children learn. Our approach is carefully designed to reduce cognitive overload by moving key concepts into long-term memory through repetition, connection, and structured practice.
A key focus of the session was the recent update to the Victorian Curriculum for Mathematics. One of the most significant changes is the shift from reporting against multiple progression points in each maths strand to a single progression point that reflects a student’s overall achievement across all strands. These strands are:
This change simplifies the reporting process and gives a clearer, more holistic picture of each student’s mathematical development. It also enables teachers to target their planning and instruction more effectively, based on where students are at in their learning journey.
Following the session, our Maths Open Night was an outstanding success! Families journeyed through a variety of interactive “Maths Lands” set up around the school, with hands-on activities designed to engage students from Prep to Year 6. The lands were specifically designed to highlight a variety of activities students will participate in across each of the strands in the Victorian Curriculum. Each completed activity earned a raffle entry, creating lots of excitement and friendly competition. It was fantastic to see parents and children exploring mathematical thinking together in a fun and meaningful way.
A huge thank you to Miss Eade for her exceptional organisation and leadership in coordinating the event. Your hard work, creativity, and passion for maths were clearly reflected in every detail, and the night was a wonderful celebration of our vibrant learning community.
