From the Assistant Principal

BE INVOLVED, BE CONNECTED

Reconciliation Week:

We find ourselves in the middle of this year’s National Reconciliation week for 2025: 27 May- 3 June. I extend my gratitude to Rachel Azzopardi and Constance Xanthos for their thoughtful powerpoint for staff regarding this year’s Reconciliation week theme: Bridging Now to Next.  This powerpoint offers entry points for our students and their teachers to engage in the act of Reconciliation and extend their knowledge of how to support this process.  It highlights two milestones in our Australian history: 1967 Referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.  I further acknowledge our contribution as a school using Reconciliation week as an opportunity to bridge relationships between our non-Koorie community and our Koorie community.  We do this by continuing to share stories and build connection.  If you would like more information on how to support Reconciliation in your homes, I encourage you to visit:

School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS):

We have completed another step in our SWPBS journey with the uptake of the staff’s Self-Assessment Survey (SAS) last week!  This survey pinpoints where we are in our SWPBS journey from the lens of the staff. Given that this is our first time engaging with the survey, the data from this year’s survey serves as our baseline. Data trends will be reflected upon annually in accordance to our rollout of SWPBS over the next 4-6 years.  As we adopt new processes through this framework, there are several areas to note:

  • SWPBS looks different at every school, thus we will make it our own at SMPPS.
  • As we develop school-wide processes, procedures and documentation, we do this in consultation.
  • Consultation starts with our SWPBS Team before moving to staff, then students and then families.
  • Any consultation with families will be predominantly through the Wellbeing Sub-Committee.
  • There are several ways we keep our families informed: Wellbeing Sub-Committee, newsletters, and assemblies.

Wellbeing Sub-Committee:

Do you have a parental passion for wellbeing?  Our subcommittee is available for parents/carers to join.  We meet approximately twice per term and discuss supports available at our school, such as SWPBS, second-hand uniform stalls, breakfast club and food supports, etc.  If you are interested, please email the school’s main email with the subject: Wellbeing Sub-Committee to let us know you’d like to join us.
