Where Play, Learning, and Faith Flourish
MECS Kinder is an exciting place filled with wonder, discovery, and growth. If you visit our Kinder, you’ll see children deeply engaged in building, pretending, creating, or exploring nature—eyes wide with curiosity and wonder. While it may look like simple fun, what’s really happening is something far more profound: play-based learning, which research shows is the most effective and meaningful way for young children to learn.
At MECS, we believe that play is not separate from learning—it is learning. In these early years, children’s brains are developing rapidly, and their natural curiosity drives them to explore, experiment, and make sense of the world around them.
Where Do the MECS Threads Fit In?
In a play-based educational program like ours, you might wonder how the MECS Threads connect to our curriculum—and even ask, is there a curriculum for play? The answer is yes! And not only is it evidenced-based and intentional, it is also deeply rooted in our Christian worldview.
Like all teaching teams at MECS, the Kinder team has been on a journey of shaping our approach to early childhood education as we thoughtfully integrate the MECS Threads into every aspect of planning and teaching to ensure that our youngest learners continue to encounter God’s truth in authentic and meaningful ways.
So, What Does This Look Like in Kinder?
In Term 1, our K3 Bluebird and Rosella groups explored the beauty and wonder of God’s creation through the Thread of Awe Dweller. Children observed the colours and details of the world around them, learned about primary and secondary colours, classified animals, sang songs, listened to stories of creation, and reflected on the truth that God made me and He loves me. These experiences helped children develop both their understanding of the world and a sense of personal identity grounded in God’s love.
In Term 2, our K4 Koala and Possum groups are delving into the theme of “I Wonder…”, fostering the Threads of Awe Dweller and Creation Keeper. They’re exploring how God’s glory is revealed in creation and how we are called to care for it. This includes investigating sustainable practices, learning about Wurundjeri seasons, understanding how to care for our bodies, and marvelling at topics such as light, dark and shadow, plant life, weather, space, and more. These experiences help children see themselves not only as learners but stewards in God’s world.
Learning with Purpose and Wonder
Through our play-based approach grounded in the MECS Threads, our children are not only developing important skills—it is our deep hope they are becoming thoughtful, joyful, and faith-filled learners who delight in God’s creation, their place in it and His love for them.
