MEAL PLANNING AND NUTRITIONAL VALUE
Over the course of the term the Year 9 students have been exploring different food groups and the importance of meal preparation.
Students have been looking at the nutritional value of dinner foods and understanding the amount of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and vitamins and minerals in each food. This allows students to investigate what meal is the healthiest option. Both these macronutrients and micronutrients allow the body to function properly. Therefore, it is important that students and families in the McKinnon community gain an understanding of what they are and examples of these food groups.
Year 9 students have undertaken different practical and theory activities to develop their understanding of nutrition. Throughout theory lessons students have researched different dinner meals they could make at home. Following this, students were able to produce recipes during practical lessons that related to meal preparation, specifically dinner.
Students made Lamb Backstrap with a feta, chickpea and rocket salad, chicken and chorizo paella and rice paper rolls and more. These are all simple recipes that allow students to gain nutrients from all food groups and have a healthy and balanced diet.
