PRIZE IN THE AGTV WERBESPOT COMPETITION!
GERMAN FILM COMPETITION WINNERS
Lights, cameras, action!! Let’s make an Internet/TV advertisement auf Deutsch!
Each year students in Year 9 German learn how to talk about TV and movies and to use German terms associated with filmmaking. Each year the Association of German Teachers of Victoria runs a competition for students, where they have to make a 1-minute promotional video that promotes a product or idea or thing – a new topic is set each year.
Our Year 9 students plan and make an advertisement in the German language, and this task forms a learning task in Semester Two at McKinnon SC.
The set topic for 2023 was “Deutsch ist erfinderisch!” [‘German is innovative!’] – this slogan was to be incorporated in a promotional video that exhorts the producers of Germany's national broadcaster ARD to make a full-length documentary about the significance of a specific German invention (and the German-speaking countries have certainly been responsible for very many inventions that have affected and enhanced people's lives, e.g. the car, x-rays, the contact lens, the mp3 file format, muesli, the mercury thermometer, bacteriology, the chip-card, the list goes on...).
Student groups at McKinnon SC developed ads promoting the Haribo Gummibärchen ('gummy bears' sweets), the automobile, the Zeppelin airship, the Christmas tree tradition, the Swiss Army knife, the clarinet, the diesel engine and nuclear fission.
We were thrilled with the results when they were published – the ad for nuclear fission (die Kernspaltung) was awarded 3rd Prize. It was created by Alex Do 9G, Dion Wiseman 9E, Jasper Wilson 9E and Mark Mao 9E (Mark was absent from the photo that accompanies this article).
Looking forward to the efforts of next year’s Year 9 students!

YEAR 10 GERMAN - ENTERPRISE GERMAN / UNTERNEHMEN DEUTSCH
Throughout Term 2 and 3, the Year 10 German class competed in the Unternehmen Deutsch project, run each year by the Goethe Institut Sydney. German students from over 60 schools in several Australian states and from regional and metropolitan areas participated in this project which connects them with German companies.
In three modules, students researched the Asia-Pacific economic area, chose a company from a German-speaking country that trades with Australia, or an Australian company with close ties to a German-speaking country. In the third module, students created a service or product for the company that they cooperated with. Their findings and ideas needed to be submitted in presentations.
Students conducted an online interview with a representative of their chosen company. The companies chosen by our students were Bretzel.Biz, Brokat Design Studios, Haribo and BMW.
Following the research of the chosen company and the interview, students had to come up with a business idea for a product or service that the company could consider, along with advertising ideas. Students described and explained their ideas in presentations and videos in written and spoken German.
Congratulations to all our students for their creativity, cooperation and teamwork. Unfortunately, we did not have a winner this year among the over 60 participants, but all students will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation in this Goethe Institut project.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS
This is the time of year to see the amazing Christmas markets of Europe. France, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and Germany all light up at this time of year. Linked below are some articles all about this experience. I highly recommend visiting at this time of year for the experience; the smells, sounds and flavours are amazing, and make braving the cold a joyful experience. It is also a good time for our students to practise their French and German.
