High Abilities Opportunities for 2024

Beaumaris Secondary College is committed to constantly seeking opportunities for all of our students to learn and grow according to their individual needs. Students who place in the top 10% of their year level through standardised testing are eligible to be considered for opportunities aimed at high abilities students.

This year, many of our high ability students have participated in advanced STEM courses through Emerging Sciences Victoria, workshops through the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series, and English and Maths enrichment courses through the Victorian High Abilities Program, along with school-based opportunities such as Maths Enrichment classes, chess competitions, and the debate team.

Year 8 (2024): HAWK

In 2024, we are offering the HAWK (High Abilities Wider Knowledge) Program, a new weekly small-group enrichment program for students who are able to demonstrate the commitment and approach to learning to work on an extended project over the course of the year. Students will be supported in building advanced analytical and research skills while working through a project that is purposeful, builds connections with our community, and develops their creative and critical thinking. Classes will be scheduled on a rotating timetable to ensure students are attending their other classes regularly, and will be supported to keep up to date with essential learning tasks.

To apply for the HAWK Program, students will need to complete the application form, outlining why they would like to be considered. Eligible students will be invited to participate in a high abilities workshop early in Term 1 as part of the application process.

Year 8 – 9 (2024): Emerging Sciences Victoria

The Emerging Sciences Victoria Program (ESV) makes it possible for highly able students to access specialised STEM subjects over the course of a semester through a virtual classroom. This program is available to select students who have demonstrated excellent results on literacy and numeracy testing, are achieving within the top 10% of their cohort, and can demonstrate a passion for STEM-based subjects. In 2023, students studied Astrophysics, Alternative Energies, Bioinformatics, and Neuroscience, and were enthusiastically positive about their experiences, with many electing to enrol in a second subject in Semester 2.

Students wishing to learn more about ESV should investigate the subject choices on the ESV website. Students must apply for ESV via the application form to be eligible to complete the program.

Questions should be directed to Ms Casley in the Southern East office or via Compass email.
